#1 4.2 Series 1 Gearbox Rebuild Cost.

Post by eTypeG » Fri Jul 06, 2012 6:37 pm

My Series 1 4.2 original gearbox is very noisy at idle and in gear(with engine running), the only time it is not is when I press the clutch pedal in, however the gears can be selected fine. Question is how much will a rebuild cost?.

Hi, I looked into this a couple of years ago and a thread exists on this. Finally I decided on using Klassic Transmissions as I had heard good things. Quoted cost was around ?500 I think. visited their premises in Wolverhampton
,small family run concern and full of gearboxes in build. Waiting time was around 2 months.
As it happened I came across a unit which had been rebuilt by Bob Bate and was in perfect order. Wasn't cheap but am very happy as I sold my old unit which brought my net cost down to the Klassic Trans quote.

Anyway if you search for the thread you will find some comments by others most noticeably the variable quality of replacement bits.

Hope this is useful - this is a bt of a minefield. You will get lots of people saying "go 5 speed". I couldn't afford it - so no question for me.

Tim

Many thanks for the reply, I live in the West Midland so your information is spot on, I will give Klassic a call. I am not intrested in the 5 speed conversion, prefer my classic cars to be as they were designed and built, flaws and all. I also plan to have the engine rebuilt any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

For a race engine try Rob Beere, for a road engine try VSE. Gearboxes are a problem because of replacement bearings and synchro rings quality so if you can live with what you have, do so.
