#1 irs removal

Post by jonhall88 » Thu Sep 13, 2012 11:17 pm

Thought I would start a new thread regarding the removal of the IRS and tell you all and hopefully avert the same problems I had. I must say thank you for all the advice given which without I would have been totally stuffed.
1. If doing the removal at home in a garage then ensure you jack the rear end up high enough, makes the job so much easier !
2. replace any dodgy parts, once the IRS is down and you dont want to do it all again.
3. New parts do not always fit  (fulcrum shafts 7 thou oversize) keep EVERYTHING
IRS is much heavier than it looks use a good jack

My major mistake.....
All stripped down, everything renewed, stainless nuts, diff oil seal, discs, pads etc On to the rebuild...... Went really well and IRS offered up and it didnt fit WHY !!!!! because being an absolute plonker I rebuilt it the wrong way round in the cage Sripped down and rebuit again (thank god for stainless nuts and plenty of grease THE LEARNING CURVE KEEPS CONTINUING

Jon,
On the subject of new parts I purchased new fulcrum bearing kits from a well known supplier of Jaguar parts only to find they did not fit. The bearings supplied (not Timken) were about half a mm wider than the originals so the hub would not fit between the arms of the lower suspension member. Upon reporting the problem I returned the bearings to said supplier who denies receiving (this could be true) so no refund. I purchased some genuine Timken bearings and everything fits as it should. Where possible OEM all the way. So far without exception every re manufactured part purchased from this supplier has required some work to make fit, nothing too serious but work all the same. :?
