#1 S3 Cooling Fan

Post by wol916 » Thu Jul 11, 2013 12:42 pm

In the seventy?s people caught on to the fact that series 3 cars had better cooling fan motors (or so I?m lead to believe). They wanted to fit these motors which were round and had a more efficient permanent magnet, so jaguar produced an aftermarket bracket for the conversion. These brackets are still around and are also available as a reproduction.

With this in mind I set off on a journey of discovery to upgrade the fans in a period style and keep a more standard look under the bonnet. I am fitting an aluminum radiator so that will do most of the work but this mod should be kinder to the wiring loom and electrical system as well as more efficient.

The old tired motor draws a lot of current and don?t go so fast.

So start with the jaguar bracket got mine on eBay new old stock ?20 for 2.

Now we need a round motor can get refurbished ones but there is a surcharge to pay, very expensive. Or you can buy new for an MGB GT as I did they?re almost identical and ?80 gets you 2 which you then put in the bracket. I think this is the single speed version of the one used in the heater fan upgrade without the bracket.

Fan blades needed. In order to improve on the old four straight blade option I went for a five blade curved one, these are 10? and come from a Rover metro ?10 the pair. The hole in the centre needs drilling from 6 to 8 mm.

Modify the electrical connections to meet up with the existing loom.

You will need to drill a hole in the motor shaft and put a roll pin in to locate the fan blade - 10mm away from the motor housing seem to be about right.

A simple push on clip 8mm is more than enough to secure the blade in place.

The finished article assembled and ready to go on the car.

I cannot show in car pictures as I?m waiting for the radiator to be made but rest assured that when bench tested they pull a lot of air.

I hope this does not offend too many people and can be of use to some
