Clutch slave cylinder type
#1 Clutch slave cylinder type
I'm replacing my leaky clutch slave cylinder.
The correct type for my 1966 FHC is the self adjusting (hydrostatic) one, (fitted from unit 7E 4606 to 7E 18356)
However, as ever, nothing is simple. From unit 7E 18357 on, Jaguar reverted to the original 80mm cylinder with the external return spring; was this for cost reasons, or was there a reliability issue with the hydrostatic one?
So, which is the better, or doesn't it matter?
Thanks in advance.

Does not matter - your biggest problem is finding a slave that does not leak because of the wrong size seals from China. If you go with the hydrostatic you will not need the spring and bracket as they would cause all sorts of problems. Personally (and I have both) I would go for the hydrostatic as it is self adjusting, unless you like crawling under the car!

Thanks David, I'll go with that; I don't crawl willingly!

I am rebuilding clutch on 2+2 series 2
When I took it apart it had return spring, large slave cylinder and adjustable clutch actuating rod
From these posts I assume I need to rebuild with large cylinder, no spring etc
What length do I set actuating rod at as I assume it should be a not adjustable one for the self adjusting clutch
Am I correct and what length should I set
Thanks

There are two types of clutch slave - the short 80mm adjustable one is C12470 and the longer 95mm hydrostatic one is C24145 which was fitted from car 7E4607 and all 2+2's. The latter is the hydrostatic version which is self adjusting and must not be fitted with the short versions return spring and bracket. The actuating rods are also a different size so if you are in any doubt on provenance buy a new appropriate rod from SNGB otherwise it will bind. Fit the rod with a bit of play at the end but as soon as you put your foot on the clutch it will adjust itself.

Many thanks. Will not fit spring
SNG only appear to sell adjustable length rod as fixed length has been superseded
Can anyone tell me length of original fixed rod please

#7 slave cylinder
I fitted the hydrostatic version. The key to setting the correct length of actuating rod is that there should be 19mm (3/4 inch) between the actuating rod when fully depressed into the slave cylinder, and the clutch operating lever when pushed fully back (holes centres measurement). Hope this helps.

I'm coming back to this old chestnut on this posting because it has the engine number details.HarryW wrote:I'm replacing my leaky clutch slave cylinder.

I also have a 1966 FHC which I was advised last year by my local E-Type specialist had a slight weep on the slave cylinder and should be replaced some time. They couldn't replace it at the time but instead suggested carrying a spare and sold me an SNGB unit ? part number C21470#. I now understand this is the short 80mm unit. They checked under the car to make sure it was the correct one.
However reading the posts on the subject, if it is the same as the one on the car then that should have the return spring fitted, but on looking it doesn't. I also measured the length of the existing cylinder and it is about 80mm long.
Also my car is in the engine number range to have the longer 95mm unit, C24145.
My clutch works fine but I ought to replace the cylinder, so my queries are:
- what are the respective rod lengths to go with the 80mm and 95mm cylinders?
- could it be that my current 80mm unit is working fine with a rod for a 95mm unit?
- with my 80mm unit why isn't the clutch affected by not having a return spring?

Dear All,
I am trying to work out if I need the clutch return spring or not on my 95mm slave cylinder on my late 1968 s1.5. This thread and all literature say not but SNG insist that all 6 cyl. e types are fitted with the same return spring. If they are wrong then this ought to be pointed out and resolved.

Butlins also agree with them and have fitted the return spring.
