#1 S1 Hood

Post by ALAN COCHRANE » Wed Jul 16, 2014 8:34 am

Hi Everyone

While I've been enjoying driving the E in this glorious Summer weather, thoughts have turned to the Winter to do list. One of the most pressing jobs is to replace the tatty, thirty year old hood. Can anyone recommend a good supplier?

Cheers

Hi Alan,

I too can highly recommend the BAS hood. See my photos here...

etypeuk.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=934&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=90

I'm not sure if you're intending to fit it yourself but it's quite a job. It took a few days for Hutson's very experienced upholsterer to fit mine (several iterations of trial fit, pin, chalk, cut, stitch, etc). The finished result is perfect though.

Cheers,

Spend a lot of time making sure the frame is adjusted properly before trimming. A badly fitted frame ruins the looks.

We are looking at fitting a zip out rear window into a customer car in order to get the air out of the car with the roof up. Has anyone any experience of doing this to an E type?

Thanks for the replies Gents. I'll give BAS a call. I strongly suspect that the existing hood is for the later 4.2 model. The car was upgraded in the early 80's with 4.2 gearbox, brakes and interior door panels for some bizarre reason. The hood doesn't have a chrome finishing strip along the header rail or behind the door windows.

Neil
I'm not sure whether I'll attempt it myself or not. It's not the first time I've heard it's a bit of a b@@@@r! Fortunately I live 5 minutes walk from another E-Type owner who's done the job himself and a rather good job he's made of it too. He's kindly offered to assist, so I might take the plunge.

I haven't done it on an E Type, Angus, but I had a zip out window on my Spitfire and on a hot sunny day, it made driving as comfortable as you can get w/o AC. It really improves air flow through the passenger compartment. If I ever have to replace my hood, I will definitely go with a zip out even though it would upset the concours boys.

I redid the hood on my 61 roadster a few years back, a hot day, patience and quality glue is needed. It was not very easy nor very difficult. Did have experience from MG/Big Healey hoods and a few interior restorations.

A few photos here, unfortunately not very informative.

Mine is a mohair hood from Aldridge trimming, IMO mohair is more user friendly to install, looks good even if you get a minor problem with tension.

Another plus for BAS. They want the car to fit it and take a day, but the result is superb. Drove through a storm an a slight leak at the head rail (but they all do anyway which is why I carry duct tape) and only a drop or two on the sill.

I got mine from BAS and fitted it myself and did quite a good job even if I say so myself :D Jack is really helpful if you get stuck. I did havea really good write up from someone at Jag-lovers but seem to have lost it. Getting it central and lined up front to back is the major thing and as Angus says making sure the hood frame is fitted correctly.

If it is done correctly you should not be able to see the windscreen chrome with the hood up - only the hood edging chrome which is designed to replace the former. Please post pictures hood up from the front showing the rail and fit to support any vendor recommendations (not DIY obviously). Only seen one car lately that was perfect and that was done by Stan at GB Trimming. I will post a picture of it tomorrow

They do not have to leak from the top to screen seal. My inflatable seal (see the upgrades section) does not leak at all even in torrential rain, assuming the seal has been pumped up to a decent pressure. I would hate to have to use duct tape across the join - on our trips we are forever putting the top up and down between showers.

John

You're right about the header rail not needing to leak When I first acquired my E it was like looking in through an old fashioned fishmongers window when washing it. I overcame this by fitting a piece of rubber strip inside the groove at the front of the hood frame and then refitting the main seal on top of it. This forced it hard against the top of the windscreen surround when the hood was up.
Since then it's been dry even when using the power wash on the car. It still leaks in all the other usual places though, but I've left them alone since it's all part of the E-Types charm.

We are at cross purposes here - not talking about fixing a leaking hood but about how it was designed in the first place. Jaguar clearly meant the hood to fit snugly to the screen rail, so spent a lot of time getting it right and leak proof. The hood has a chrome strip which fits over the chrome windscreen surround. A properly fitted hood does not leak water at all but mucking about with the rubbers or catches on a poorly set up hood will not get results. The test is easy - look at your car from the front and if you can't see the chrome windscreen top rail you have a well fitted hood. Mine certainly fails the test and it leaks!

This is how it should not be (my own car I am ashamed to say!):
Image

It was an even spacing all along until I tightened up the centre toggle in a vain attempt to stop it leaking. The hood chrome should completely hide the windscreen chrome.

David

The problem I have with my dhood is twofold-
It doesn't fit neatly across the top- similar to your picture and I don't have a chrome strip along the leading edge. This makes me think it's not the right hood to start with. It's also lacking the chrome trim behind the door glass. My fix is effective and will do until I purchase a new and correct hood this coming Winter.

This is the way GB Trim do it:

Absolutely no leaks at 80mph in the pouring rain according to Ken Verity who restored this OBL car.

Mine looks like yours David  , with the difference that the visible screen chrome part is regular overall length, and I am not ashamed!
I do get few drops on passenger side under real heavy summer rains at highway speed.
The 3 latches are presently well seated and rather at their shortest adjustment. Hence, if it were to have the screen chrome going deeper in the groove, I am wondering how could I then still latch the hood properly?
Eager on getting good comments.

I'm not getting much success from my parallel post

viewtopic.php?f=3&t=10352

about roof/door/windscreen adjustments so thought I could move sideways and resuscitate this thread which touches nicely on the subject.

I've not got the screen in nor the doors and their glass in place right now, but offering up the now-stripped hood mechanism shows me that I'm way off David's Ideal - where with the hood in the up position its front chrome trim overlaps to become a replacement for the screen-top chrome trim.

Image

Image

The only way I can get any kind of match of the hood-pan and side toggles is to disconnect the side-bars (that come down to the wheel-arches) as - see from the pictures - there's a good half-diameter misalignment.

Image

Image

Even like this, though, the hood pan is a good 1/2" too high even at the door-pillar level, if my hood front is meant to cover the windscreen trim.

Are we agreed that this covering of the windscreen trim is indeed Factory Correct ?

If so I'm going to suffer from the Chris Vine Syndrome where, and I quote :

...... RS Panels next door ..... had to weld a one inch strip to the front of the canopy and completely reshape the curvatures to get it to fit ....
