Last early car in that sort of condition sold for ?110k at Bonham's and is currently undergoing a ?250k+ restoration at CMC. Think carefully about what you do next and in the meantime don't do anything to it!

Morning David and thank you for the advice, that's come as a bit of a shock, being passoinate about motoring and having owned a few XJs in the past I knew it was a desirable car but not to that extent.

I also realised that a poorly executed, under funded restoration would probably be detrimental to the car. The car is in a secure location and as you have advised has remained untouched other than a cursory look around.

Thanks again for your comments.

Paul.

People seem to get excited about a "barn find" and Bonham's managed the publicity of the white car perfectly. Certainly worth asking their advice and giving them your superb set of 'reveal' photos which I guess they would use to make sure the car gets maximum exposure in the press. http://www.bonhams.com/press_release/13501/

Odd really because the car is going to take a long time to get up to a resale value of ?350k. ?100k will get you a nicely restored open E-Type if you shop around. Great to see the pictures and hear the story though. Incidentally those enamel signs at the back of the garage are also worth a fair bit!

Well I guess it is quite exciting exposing something that has been hidden for many years and it is an interesting story.
I guess the owner of number 60 is not doing it for investment but for the enjoyment.
The owners daughter has laid claim to the signs which are indeed very nice.

Paul

Welcome to the club. I checked your car on XKEdata but nothing came up. You might want to add any details you have:-

http://www.xkedata.com

My OTS was 850389 and manufactured in November 1961. It was reckoned to be one of the 30 oldest RHD roadsters without flat floors or o/s bonnet locks. It looks like yours beats that with a serial number like that.
It looks like your car has the internal bonnet locks. Is it a flat floor model? Do you know when it was built?
It looks like it has had the radiator upgraded to the later 4.2 version as has mine. I'm not sure what the cooling was like with those two spotlights blocking most of the air intake though!

Cheers

Alan, I did load the data and photos on XKE data last night but it's not showing yet.

This was delivered on 6 November 1961 and has the flat floor pan. I am awaiting the Heritage Certificate to arive. I have the old original logbook which states the car was cream.

I'll take your word on the radiator but the cooling was probaly not great with those spots. All part of the nice 60s modernisation someone carried out
Cheers
Paul.

Thanks Mark,

I had an interesting find today, as I said earlier we have a correct R prefix 3.8 engine in the car. However some idle googling revealed the original engine fitted to this car R1661-9 is sat in an XK150 chassis S837930DN
as found on XK Data.

Good news that it's still running and never ended up at the scrap yard. Would be interesting to find out how it ended up where it is.

Cheers
Paul.

It could take a few days for your car to show up on xkedata as Paul (Lofty) has to go through quite a few cars and verify them before adding them. Lawyers etc!

#12 Body number.

Post by Paul190H » Wed Jul 30, 2014 11:42 am

Hi chaps, could anybody fully identify where I can find the body number stamped? I am aware that it is on the ID plate but I beleive it is also stamped on the body itself?
Thanks
Paul.

Behind the rear number plate. Will be held on by two rivets and should be oblong in shape. Whilst you are there any change you could give me some details on the rear plate itself? I am interested if it has a makers name on it (typically Bluemels) and if it just a flat plate or whether it has a raised edge. The original Bluemels plates are very rare and I am having difficulty finding one to add to our Factory Fit thread.

It may also be on the left side rear side panel in the trunk area (that's where it is on my OTS 850626), where there's a small oval plate riveted to the sheet metal.

It could also be behind the brake fluid bottles. The first 500 cars had them there and this one being on the cusp could also.

David, found the body number plate in the LHS of the boot area. Unfortunately I misread your post and took close up numbers of the body plate not the number plate. Will rectify this and get some close ups of the number plate, although zooming in on my photo it does look flat with no lip.

David, I do not believe ours are Bluemels, They have no nameplete but the name is punched into the aluminium. I have a poor I phone photo of it sent to me but will get a better one for you. There is a bit to much paint on the plate to make out the manufacturer but will have a better look this week.
