On the lhs of the top cover is a number which will give a good clue as to what it originally came from. It is there in the photo, nearest the camera, but is too small to read. However, generally speaking , any all synchro box with the later Compact A od will fit, - see Peter Crespin's observations in a number of threads on this subject . These were fitted to S type and XJ cars I believe, but it is possible that a very late Mark 2 box also will do. I am afraid I am not knowledgeable enough to recognise which OD this is from the photographs, but the tail piece of the OD is much shorter than that on my Daimler Mark 2 so it may be that it is the compact type

That's an A type Laycock de Normanville O/D. The later J Type had the operating solenoid mounted horizontally on the side shown in your photo. If you want more info on it check out the TR Register Forum. There are endless threads on there about both types.

Yes KFN will be from an auto 1968-1978 XJ IIRC. Fine for a 2+2.
The lid will be fine for an auto as you can cut the body tunnel to bring the lever out where the selector emerges and just widen the console hole for the H gate. If your car is a manual just swap trans tops and keep everything else as-is.

In his photo, the solenoid is mounted horizontally. Did you mean vertically ?ALAN COCHRANE wrote:

Hi all...thanks for your replies just to follow up....the number on the lid kfn5734 indicates its probably from an early xj6......what I thought was a date stamp is 1993 on the main casing lug is actually jbn1993 indicating from early S type......the overdrive was my main concern as it does not say compact A type....the serial number is 28/........is a J type with a 28% increase in ratio....1 rev in 1.28 out this overdrive used in 2.5 range triumphs and 240 volvoes....I did find a reference saying that the 28 type was used by Jaguar....but could find no more info.....have been told that the whole set up with the top cover replaced wilh the one from my 2+2 will go straighi in.........Steve

All Triumphs used the J Type OD from 1974 onwards, in most cases this came with a 25% reduction, however, in the 2500 cars it was 28%, I think that's where you're getting the figure from. The earlier 2000/2500/Stags & TR's used a Type A OD but this wasn't the compact unit.mgcjag wrote:Hi all...thanks for your replies just to follow up....the number on the lid kfn5734 indicates its probably from an early xj6......what I thought was a date stamp is 1993 on the main casing lug is actually jbn1993 indicating from early S type......the overdrive was my main concern as it does not say compact A type....the serial number is 28/........is a J type with a 28% increase in ratio....1 rev in 1.28 out this overdrive used in 2.5 range triumphs and 240 volvoes....I did find a reference saying that the 28 type was used by Jaguar....but could find no more info.....have been told that the whole set up with the top cover replaced wilh the one from my 2+2 will go straighi in.........Steve

I need my eyes tested. When I looked at the picture originally I didn't see the solenoid so assumed it was a J-Type. Both types have the solenoid on this side. I've asked more learned colleagues on the "other" Forum and it appears that the A type did have it's solenoid mounted both vertically and horizontally. Although I've only experience with TR setups which always had the vertical option on A-Type units.
The J-Type always had two diagonal ribs on the middle section of the casing which this unit appears to lack The J-Type also two spade terminals on the solenoid whereas the A-Type, I think, only had one.
Anyway tomorrow I'm off to the opticians for a check up!

Not a 'problem' as such, but a lower-geared diff would suit a 0.28 reduction better. It's a Jag box and compact type A OD no question - I've got an identical early one with the inspection cover like that one. As such, I suspect it will be 0.75:1 top gear not 0.72:1.mgcjag wrote:Hi Peter.....diff ratio 43/14 (3.07)........can you forsee a problem.....thanks for your help. Steve
S0o as long as you just use it for cruising your 2+2 and don't slog the engine too hard in a very high top gear you'll be fine. I know David runs stratospherically tall gearing on his OTS but he has a lower weight and frontal area, a beefy motor, and feeds the car expensive Witches Brew fuel :-) Have fun.

Hi all........Peter..thanks for the heads up......only intend to use as a cruise gear so will stick with the existing diff.......Ian....Alan.......in trying to find the origin of the o/d I was searching the net for any ref to the serial no 28/60552 everything I looked at referenced the 28 to a J type for triumph and volvo......however reverted to the phone and called overdrive servises who advised that the serial no I quoted was supplied between 1963/9 and used in Mk10 and Daimler soveriegn and is a compact type A even though it does not say on the id tag .Thanks again for all your input Steve.......PS for info for anyone looking for gearbox/o/d the measurement from front face of gearbox to prop flange is 49.9cm as confirmed by Ian.......

Wonderful picture. I have a collection of pictures of Mk2 'boxes (with long A-type overdrive & long tailshaft) and XJ6 boxes (with compact A-type overdrive) and manual E-type boxes (Moss and later EJ/EJS), and can tell straight off that this picture matches perfectly with the XJ6 S1/S2 MOD 'box. But you already know that now
If you don't use the 'box give me a shout and I'll take it off your hands. Can give you a BW8 slushbox and a proper Moss box (1962 E-type) and a 4-speed EJ-box in return :D
