Cheney hose clips

Having read the threads about the Cheney clips, I decided to see if I could make myself a special tool to make it easier to tighten them up, without ruining the heads.

Here's what I came up with....

I made the small part using the lost wax technique to fit the screw head in cobalt chrome (metal denture material) -





Fitted to the clip




Decided to cut the end off a 1/4" socket and laser welded the cast chrome section on to it, to make my 'special socket'

Brilliant! How do you do that?

Hi, first you have to make a wax pattern of the part then make a refractory mould then place mould into a burn out furnace to remove wax, melt metal and cast. I have to explain that i'm a dental technician so its what I do day in day out! Luckily I'm able to make and repair some parts.

Suggestion for alternative method:

Take a suitably sized flat headed screwdriver (or grind to suitable size) and then fix a sleeve around the head. Sleeve could be metal piping (copper, steel, etc). Doesn't need to be welded, since it's only doing guiding of the screwdriver blade. Epoxy, or even heat-shrink tubing, to secure the metal sleeve should suffice.

This is really clever and constructive, but don't forget you can just order Cheney style clips from XKs Unlimited in the USA.

The clever and constructive thoughts are directly at a "non-slip" tool for the Cheney clamps. Avoiding damaging neighbouring paint or the hose itself.

Good to know that Cheney-style clamps are available new, and not just S/H on eBay. Thanks for sharing !

Bresco .com sell them in the UK ,saves paying import duty.

for what its worth, I ordered clamps from the above named supplier and found them inferior in quality and construction to the originals. I..and my mechanic were concerned not just about cosmetics but the ability of the clamps to hold. Just one man's opinion. I returned them and looked for originals elsewhere.

I bought a set from XK's and whilst the large Cheney clips are OK and usable the small ones are pretty useless and you can't put any real pressure on them before they either break or strip the threads.
