#1 New wire wheels, curly or flat?

Post by r.ludeke » Thu Mar 26, 2015 10:16 am

Hello everyone, i'm now in the last weeks of the restoration of my ser2 2+2. The engine is running 8) and everything is getting in place. Waiting for my speedo to return with a nice dial face in km/h and the two front seats are being done art this moment. The windscreen is in place, the job itself was done in half an hour but the two chrome strips allmost took me a day to get in place  .
The only big thing that needs to be done is the wheels. I have 3 flat wire wheels and one curly. There is some rust on them so i was thinking of replacing them. Found a very nice set of flat hub wheels on ebay in germany but they are 6 inch k. I don't now where the k stands for but i'm afraid they will touch the bump stop on the inside.
If i look on the mws website they mention backspacing. Is this the important size to tell if they will touch the bump stop? Because the 6 inch wheels sometimes have less backspacing then the 5inch. So the clearance with the bump stop should improve?
There is also a set of curly hub ser1 for sale, but the backspacing is less then the backspacing of the flat hub wheels. Will this give a problem on a ser2 car?
Thanks for your idea's

Hi. Firstly congratulations on getting near the end of your restoration.
.If your car is a series 2 then don't spoil it by putting on the curly hub wires,
from an early car , you will be constantly reminded at shows that these are the wrong type and will regret it.
Stick to an original set of flat hubs with the correct size tyres , not sure about 6inch rims I have heard reports of heavy steering and difficult to remove from the rear arches although owners with 6ince rims will correct me ? Hope this helps. K.
