LHD to RHD Conversion - Anyone here done it?

I have replaced LHD power rack with a RHD manual rack and moved over all the steering components.
The lower column is now to short on the RH side and the UJ is fouling the bulkhead. Its 3 inches short of the upper column.
Im tempted to extend the lower column by pulling it apart and breaking the nylon seal (collapsible lower column) although im worried because I cant see any reference to extending the lower column in Mick Cassidys guide.
My car is a US spec late 69 2+2 auto.
The steering was fine before, I have removed all the LHD power steering and replace with RHD manual components.
Any advice welcome
