#1 Alternators - internal or external regulators?

Post by malcolm » Fri Jun 05, 2015 3:22 pm

Thinking of changing my alternator on my series 2 2+2. It struggles to keep voltage up when loading the system (cooling, wipers, etc) then I'll keep the old one as a spare.
Question is, fosseway do an internally regulated Denso type alternator, SNG Barratt do an uprated 55 amp alternator which still uses the external regulator. Which is considered better?

I only fit in a 2+2, so got one!

My standard Lucas regulator failed a couple of years back as we were passing Lille and it destroyed the SBS40 battery that had been fitted for 14 years  Fortunately the construction of the battery meant it did not explode but it did bulge in all directions. The Lucas regulators are prone to failure either causing no charge or over-charge. They are best avoided and an alternator with internal regulation fitted. More info here: viewtopic.php?t=6668
