#1 Uni joint lubrication.

Post by abowie » Mon Oct 26, 2015 12:09 am

I replaced the rear half shaft UJs on my 4.2 coupe yesterday. They were about 8 years old but have covered less than 10000 miles since the car was restored.
On both sides there was visible axial play in them; about 2mm on one side and a little less on the other.
When installing the new name brand replacements it said on the instructions to use standard or lithium grease but NOT molybdenum based grease. The old ones probably had been lubed with moly; they were black.
I guess the likelihood is that they wore out prematurely because either they weren't lubed frequently enough or they were just crap to start with.
But the comment about moly grease got me thinking...
So my question is does moly damage UJs?

Don't know the answer to your question, but when I couldn't find any severe service units with grease fittings, I decided to try the Spicer sealed joints, which are popular with the off-road truck community. All components are upgraded and equipped with triple seals on the caps. Time will tell...

I have used Spicer ones as well. Surprisingly inexpensive and available locally to me.
