OK Simon, here goes...... Bear in mind, the car could (I repeat could) have been registered in, say, Guildford - in which case there may be other registrations available - but if you were able to add an age-related mark at some stage, and wanted to retain the cars' Sussex heritage, then these may be the best to look for.

DPX used from Nov '61 to Feb '62; DPO from Oct 61 to Feb '62; EPO from Feb '62 to May '62; VPM from Sep '61 to Mar '62 followed by WPM from Mar '62; VPN from Nov '61 to Apr '62; VNJ from Jul '61 to Feb '62 followed by WNJ from Feb '62; WAP from Dec '61 to May '62 and XAP from May '62. You could also have had EBP, issued from Jan '62 to April/May.

As far as I know, there is still a county records "department" for both East and West Sussex authorities - checking on-line for West Sussex seems to indicate that their records for when you need them may be sparse - but try them anyhow. I know when I tried for my own records with Staffordshire/Stoke-on-Trent, they told me that DVLA had everything - and DVLA said they could not go back beyond about the mid '70's! Good luck with it though.

You can use a V888 from the dvla......only a couple of years ago i used it and found tne original reg no for my 1968 MGC plus lots of other info, over tne phone they told me they did not have the records but when i sent tne form in lots of info was returned

Steve - yep, that's the form I used - DVLA still could not go back beyond the mid '70's though in my case. I guess it depends what was transferred to them from the old district registration offices - maybe different in every case, I guess.
