FACTORY FIT - Series 1 4.2
#1 FACTORY FIT - Series 1 4.2
One of the problems we have when restoring our cars (or replacing a component) is understanding exactly how the factory fitted them. We are adding 'stickies' for each model Series which will contain detailed photographs from the area of a car that the photographer believes to be untouched from when it was originally built. Over time, we hope to build a comprehensive resource for restorers to reference. If you have a photograph you would like to add, please send them via PM to any of the moderators (this will allow us to avoid any duplicates etc). Below is the link to the JCNA judging guides (these can be printed off and are a useful reference when trying to work out what colour to paint a component for example).
S1: http://www.jcna.com/library/tech/e-type1.pdf
S1.5: http://www.jcna.com/library/concours/2006/e-type1.5.pdf
However please check the 3.8 Factory Fit thread because some features are carried over between models (e.g. clips, horn push etc ).
Please help support this new initiative. Angus.

"Vin #: 1E10658
Engine #: 7E2871-9
Body #: 4E1803
Mileage: 19,329
This impressive, single-family owned 1965 Jaguar 4.2L E-Type Series I Roadster is a remarkable matching-numbers original car. Presumed to be owned by a Hollywood celebrity, this XKE has not been molested or abused, and was very well kept and serviced by its previous owner. Equipped with an original tool kit, jack, knock off hammer, keys, and rare ladies foot rest on the passenger side, the roadster also features a nicely preserved Davis Radio Corp. "Le Chaperon" AM push-button radio, ready for those long summer drives! With a remarkable patina of originality throughout, and only needing some minor work on the top and a repairable dent on the driver's side door, this E-Type presents a great opportunity for the Jaguar purist to own an original, unmolested, and wonderfully preserved example."

Car Radio
Jaguar offered a 'Car Radio Assembly' as an optional extra. There were three versions - LW/MW, MW/SW and MW only:
By looking at the kit list you will see there was a head unit, one loudspeaker, bracket, aerial, wiring and no less than four suppression condensers so not a simple push-in fit as most people imagine. The radio's were supplied by Radiomobile (a merger of S. Smith & Sons and The Gramaphone Company aka His Masters Voice). The radio's could either be badged His Masters Voice, Smiths or Radiomobile and the fascia/knobs varied depending on what was required by the car manufacturer.
Radiomobile 530T (M/W & S/W)
Country: Great Britain
Model: 530T
Manufacturer / Brand: Radiomobile Ltd., Cricklewood Works, London alternative name S.Smith and Sons

Wave bands: Broadcast only (MW/SW).
Power type and voltage: Storage Battery for all / 12 Volt
Loudspeaker: This model requires external speaker(s).
Material: Metal case
Shape: Chassis only or for building in
When the station knob is turned the whole inner face rotates and shows stations as follows: MW, 90M, 60M, 49M, 41M, 31M, 25M, 19M, and 16M

Unlike the 3.8's the 4.2's were only fitted with one speaker despite having the two grills.
The aerial on the E-Type was typically fitted to the scuttle near the drivers door. There is a hole in the inner strengthening panel to accommodate it. View of the bulkhead showing internal hole for aerial shaft (LHD in this case):
There were very many after market radios available but these are the only ones offered by the Factory. If you want to be totally correct remember the dial was marked in metres (wavelength) for both Long and Medium waves in the UK whereas kilocycles (frequency) was used elsewhere in the world.

For the 4.2 cars Jaguar listed number plates under 'Optional Extras' in the Spare Parts Catalogue:
From this you will see that silver was the Jaguar chosen colour for the front self adhesive characters above a black plate and silver "peak" characters for the rear. After 1963 all number plate characters were required, by law, to be 3 1/8" high (and that still applies to pass the MOT). These are 'peak' characters:
The font is also of the period and many cars are spoiled by having silver and black plates with the modern standard computer generated font on them. This particularly applies to the front number plate which just looks wrong on the E-Type with modern digits:
The only place I know that will do the front stick on plate in the original 1960's font is Tippers and then you have to explicitly specify the requirement as they are hand cut. Frampton's when asked - "Computer says no".

OTS Boot Seal
The rubber boot seal used on the 3.8 cars was glued to the boot lid. For the 4.2 cars a revised neoprene seal was used and pressed onto the lip of the boot opening. The seal is no longer available and the alternative seal that is generally available is not particularly good at its job.

Front side/indicator Lens
The front and rear lamp units were supplied by Lucas as complete assemblies.
Side and Front Flasher Lamps:
The front lamps were common to both FHC and OTS with either a white or amber flasher lens depending on market.
Up until ~March 1965 the side light lens was the same as on the 3.8 cars. The original front side lamp lenses were of a simple design which had a series of 12 evenly spaced horizontal internal ridges or flutes running from left to right.
For some reason (damage to mould or better light output?) Lucas/Jaguar changed the internal design of the lens. Where previously it was a random array of small dots it became a central 'Fresnel' type lens. This was achieved by removing the central part of the mould and letting in the new design. The fluted lenses have not been available since because the original moulds were irrevocably changed. Exact copies are now available from Marek - contact via PM
The later lens is available from SNGB and others (although I have seen some which are not marked as 'Lucas' so check before you buy).

We are re-commissioning an un-molested 1966 FHC (car won't be restored but put back on the road with the minimum amount of work in order to preserve its' originality).
More photos can be found at http://www.mossjaguar.com./grey-s1-fhc.html
This is the car in question:
This picture shows the boot floor. Note the sound deadening material on the rear bulkhead and number plate panel:
These are the screws that hold the rear lights in place with the 2 lucas screws for the lens (note the rubber washers have long since perished):
Picture shows a rubber bung (similar to that used as a landing pad for the fuel filler flap) in the forward hole of the spare wheel holder.
Dum dum used as a sealer for the number plate lights:
Number plate light components plus screws.
In order to reduce fumes entering the cockpit, this rubber grommet was used to seal the indicator bulb holder. (The rear light was sealed using a sponge similar to pipe insulation):
Rear hatch stay fitting (note Thackeray washers):
Difficult to see in this shot but the reversing light wires are held in place by 2 clips (the self tapper and spire clip are to hold the rear number plate on):

Lucas Battery
From 1965 a more modern FRE 117/A battery was used with internal links and red plugs. It also seems Jaguar responded to complaints about the difficult access to the terminals by moving them from the inside to the outside. The Lucas decal (6 1/4" wide and 3 7/8" tall) is totally unlike the 1970's red/gold style reproduction:
The FRV11/7A battery code translates as follows:
FR = Ferguson (tractors) special battery - the XK engine required a heavy duty battery so this was chosen
V = type and size of plates
11 = number of plates per cell
7 = special assembly to Jaguar requirements
A = terminal layout and nominal voltage
Note: the decal is from a US Lucas battery; "Lucas Electrical Services, Inc" stamp would not be on the UK version. More on the Lucas battery here: http://forum.etypeuk.com/viewtopic.php?p=42758#42758
Many thanks to Tom Keohan for providing the pictures of his original battery - a rare survivor! The correct Lucas decal and red filler caps are now being reproduced and available on eBay

Rear light seals
As Angus showed above, Jaguar worked hard to seal the car from sound, water and exhaust ingress. #25393 ''Grommet, for Tail Lamps" is no longer available but was used to prevent exhaust gases being drawn into the cabin or boot space. Note the unusual shape. In addition they used two shaped pieces of foam to seal the indicators, although I can find no part number. As far as I can tell these were not Factory Fit to the 3.8 FHC cars, which lacked the filler panel, but may have been on the 3.8 OTS which had the filler panel.

The first approx 59 S1 LHD OTS cars were fitted with Smiths RV7413/10 5,500 rpm tachometer:
All RHD S1 4.2's and LHD cars after about chassis No 1E 10059 were fitted with RV7413/11 which shows a maximum of 6000rpm but with a bigger red band from 5000 to 6000 rpm.

Frames
There has been discussion as to whether the frames were painted when bolted to the car or done separately. These are the frames from 1E31370 a mid 1965 build car. You can see how the body number was chalked onto the frames after they were painted:

Radio Console Rubber Seal
A rubber seal BD24393 fits under the instrument legend strip and folds against the radio console when the centre dash panel is closed. It is there for cosmetic reasons although missing on most cars because the indicator strip needs to be removed to lower the console! It was not fitted to alloy dash 3.8's but started to appear in 1964 with the introduction of the vinyl trimmed console's:

Nice pictures David, did you notice the cotton covered edge trim on the B posts?

Wow. Astonishing condition. Extremely useful (for me at least) addition to Factory Fit, thanks David.
I hadn't appreciated just how dark that dark blue interior is. Navy. Looks black but I guess that's a photo issue? At any rate it's a nice combo.

Interesting that on engine no. 7E 3352-9 that the gold colour does not extend up to the base of the rocker covers. I was told in an earlier thread this year that that is not original.

Some details from Angus Moss's Oct 1966 FHC from California which he believes was untouched since new.
You should also study the photos on his website (http://www.mossjaguar.com), which give more general views and more of the mechanicals. I took these photos to clear up some questions I had about trim, fittings, paint etc. and hope they may be of some help to others.
Radiator fan cowl is raw silver fibreglass, not painted:
Water and breather pipes cad plated, not painted; picture frame/ engine frames painted before assy, bolts unpainted:
Aluminium "J/67" plate just aft of "Made in England" plate. I don't know what this is:
Wiper motor connectors secured with strap:
"Hammered" silver finish can be so fine as to be almost plain silver, as here:
Radiator duct shield C18282 painted black; radiator stone guard frame looks rather like cad plate on this car, not dove grey paint as in JCNA Judging guide.
Bonnet balance links cad plated, springs black. Also bonnet loom clip position:
Front shocks blue:
Oval washers (not circular) securing heater air intake to bonnet:
Wing bead clips folded over twice:
Lead/wire seal on seat belt anchorage (not sure what this certified nor which markets it applied to):
Handbrake lever sealing rubber is fibre-reinforced:
Sill seal with moulded rebate for door drains:
Clip which looks like BD10313 - secured the end of the bumper rubber in place:
Bitumen sound deadening pads with hexagonal pattern on boot floor, fitted before final paint:
Heavy (thick) Hardura on front and back of spare/tank well, fitted before tank; thin Hardura on top of tank:
Drain hole by spare anchor point, plugged from underneath with what looks like the petrol filler flap landing buffer:
Petrol filler flap landing buffers are flat, not domed, to ensure flap lies flush with body:
3x of what looks like the same buffer on longitudinal U-section supporting spare wheel cover board:
Rear hatch stay: chromed flat panhead screws for bracket to hatch:
But cad plated flat panhead self-tappers for bracket to body:
