#1 Where does this go?

Post by dmarsh2426 » Sat Jul 26, 2025 3:43 pm

I have refurbished my 4 speed gearbox in my '67 OTS: new bearings, new companion shaft, new thrust washers, new seals, and new synchros. I have reassembled it and it seemed to shift fine. It is back in the car now.
The other day, under my workbench I found a small spring. It is smaller and less dense than the detent springs as seen in the second photo. It is tapered as well.

I dont remember seeing other springs like this while I was rebuilding the gearbox.
It is almost the size of a spring from a ballpoint pen, but is heavier.

Needless to say, I do not look forward to removing the engine and gearbox again, but I guess I will have to if this is indeed integral to a functioning gearbox.. :banghead:

I don't recall any springs inside the gearbox that look like that.

I can only assume that one end of the wormhole that eats springs in my workshop exits under your bench...

I wondered where those have been coming from!
I may have some of your washers too.

Hello Dan,
For absolute certain, that spring didn't come out of your gearbox, unless someone during previous work, inadvertently dropped this foreign item into the gearbox.

Bill
