#1 Starter motor gear lubrication

Post by Philippe-J. » Tue Sep 09, 2025 11:24 am

On dismantling my starter motor for a deep inspection and cleaning, I found that the internal gears were lubricated with a sort of (old) oil.

Shouldn't I use a (new) grease instead?

This extract from a 1973 Lucas Workshop Instruction on the "Roller Clutch Drive Assembly" may help.

Excellent Bob, thank you!
I found the info about Shell SB2628 that I needed. It's a "polybutyle Cuprisil (PBC) corrosion resistant grease". Sounds better than the oil I found. However a quick search on the Internet shows it is not easy to find.
BTW this document contains a simpler explanation than the workshop manual about the way the starter motor works.
