You can buy an 8 point socket (can't remember the size) which is perfect for the job. Not easy to find an imperial one in Europe but they are available in the US: http://tinyurl.com/o8pv3xu

thanks Heuer

should be a 9/16 as my 14mm spanner was OK (but no correct position could unscrew the plug )

To remove the plug I use a 1/2" ratchet drive extension reversed. If you attach a universal 1/2 " to the free end you can then attach it to your drive.

8 point socket heads are difficult to find.

CAUTION .... these plugs are tapered in order to limit the depth of entry into the differential. Using a standard bolt might cause interference in the gears.

I have ordered an 8 point set in the USA; it costs me 50? but it might be useful in other occasions, you never have enough tools...
but I do not understand how you can use a 1/2" square female for a 9/16" square male

There are plumbing tools made specifically to fit the square end of a pipe plug.

This post has drawn over 2,100 views to date and is obviously of interest as an item on the car that we all would be tackling at some point in our maintenance.

Although this post is about the issues around removal of the standard Jaguar plug, the question arose about the actual thread of the plug and I was correct in my believe that the thread is 3/4 inch and is in fact a taper plug type at 3/4 inch BSPT.

In order to address this point and to avoid people having to trawl all the way through this post to get to this conclusion - and to assist people in finding either a more accurate square drive plug which can be addressed by an Imperial spanner or a different form of drive to use to undo the plug - I have started a new post titled "Diff filler/level plug Thread and alternatives"

I trust this assists.
