Hi I have built a 4.2 engine and box both of unknown parentage and the clutch arm dose not throw far enough for the bearing to contact the flywheel. Any ideas ?
I had the car all built before I noticed this so not happy having to strip down. Thanks

I would say the wrong release bearing....there are different depth ones...or is it your slave pushrod..there again are different lengths
Steve..ps one has worn out carbon but look at the metal section pivot point to face...there are a few different types

Has anyone got an S1 manual gearbox they can measure the overall length of. I remember when I built it up the gearstick fouled the housing and I had to relieve it slightly .When the clutch pedal is depressed the arm operates but does not touch the plate. when clutch is operated you can get the arm going all the wat in the opening till it touches the casing without the release bearing touching the clutch cover, when I used a bore scope it was about 1/4 inch away. Very frustrating.

As Steve says the bell housings are pretty much all the same. A Moss box bell has a smaller diameter front bearing (0.25" smaller from memory) so won't fit an all synchro box without machining.

As best as I can tell your clutch fork looks standard. The part number is C9797 and this is common to both the Moss boxes and the all synchro boxes. This is cast on the underside of the fork and you should be able to see this looking through the hole in the bell housing.

Just received new clutch and measures exactly the same , it would still not allow any contact with the thrust bearing when gearbox mounted. As I say this engine and gearbox came to me as an unknown quantity. they both look completely standard with no machine marks. The only thing I can think of doing is having a 6mm ring the same size as on face of cover plate where bearing meets. BUT I am loath to do this I would much rather solve the mystery. When gearbox is mated there is about a 2mm gap even when thrust bearing is on full travel. i.e. the arm at full movement hitting back of bellhousing. Any thoughts.

I asked previously what clutch do you have...a photo of the cover and release bearing would be good....I'm still thinking you have the wrong release bearing...Steve

Hi Bryan,

Steve is trying hard to help you but you're not answering the questions he is asking. Why would you order another clutch kit before you know exactly what you have already got?

There are several combinations of clutch components, most of which will be completely wrong for any given application. Please follow Steve's methodical approach so everybody here can help you to find the right installation for your engine and gearbox.

You have a vast wealth of experience and knowledge here at your disposal but you really need to help the experts to help you. We are all lucky that the people on this forum are a lot more tolerant and friendly than most other forums.

Regards

Sorry I had a complete 3 piece clutch delivered today and measured all the pieces and they are identical . I was not sure about the pressure plate that came with the engine as it looked used but exactly as the new one. Both the carbon thrust bearings are also the ame. I mounted the new clutch and it was the same as the one supplied.

Hi Bryan,
Once you've solved your clutch/plate/fork issue, you may also want to check your slave cylinder whilst you're at it. It looks like you have the longer Hydrostatic self adjusting version that doesn't require the spring, (thats only for the shorter cylinders which your S1 car may well fall under).

Looks like the wrong ( shallower ) release bearing to me.
