#1 Clutch Slave Cylinder Replacement

Post by johnben » Sun Dec 18, 2011 1:20 pm

I replaced my clutch a couple of months ago, over time I had adjusted what was left to the point that I had to stop the engine to get into reverse gear. I was intending to install a 5 speed box whilst the engine was out but the figures did not stack up. Probably ?3-4 K for the box plus another ?2-3K for all the other work I was going to do represented probably a third of the value of the car (Ser 1 2+2).
Anyway back to the clutch, on finally getting to it I was surprised to find that it was only part worn, however, the thrust bearing had completely worn out. I generally don?t drive with my foot on the clutch so I presume the fault was elsewhere.
I have the hydrostatic slave cylinder and I did put a light return spring on the operating fork, as suggested by someone of the forum. after putting in the new clutch. However, I do not really have any faith in the system and as Jaguar abandoned it I am inclined to do the same thing and replace it with the shorter version.
Is this a straight swap or do I have to retain the push rod etc? Also the bleed screw is at the bottom, as is mine, as anyone changed this to the top and if so does this create other problem as regards access?

Easy to fit the 80mm slave but you will need the correct return spring, bracket and actuating rod. You can modify the hydrostatic rod to fit but as all parts should be available from SNG it probably is not worth the trouble.
