#1 Triple HD8 rebuild

Post by Vegard » Fri Apr 15, 2016 9:24 am

As some of you know, I'm in the process of removing the Stranglebergs and fitting a set of HD8s on my dad's E-type. I'm also rebuilding the carbs, and fitting a cable conversion kit. I've got a couple of questions in that matter.

What are the items marked out here??

Someone mentioned that some holes needed blanking when going from twin Strombergs, which are these??

The dished washer goes on the slow running valve #15 in the picture. Spring probably also.

On my car the vacuum offtake for the distributor is on the front carb - you have it on the rear.

I agree that they appear to be part of the slow running valve. The large screw should have the spring put on it, and the assembly is then completed by the spring seat ( the metal part you have ringed ) and a conical o ring which holds the lot together

Steve : I've just looked again using the View button on the numbered list, and I agree they look more like 27 than 15 . But where are the volume screw bits ?

Edit : or are they two of the bits in the lower left half of the photo, together with the longer spring in the middle ?

Probably the best way to tell whats what is to look up what the part no of the kit is you ordered and list its contents....then check with the Burlan site, and make sure what fits where and which way around those dish shaped washers fit.....

Correct IMO. Are part of the spindle seal kit with cork seals, WZX 994. I would advice the newer rubber seals though i frunning on modern fuel with ethanol.

It is definitely not from a part from the slow running valve.

I just noticed that one dashpot piston was longer than the two others. The result is that the dashpot won't rise fully.

Are there several types?

Burlen calls out different numbers for the 420 and the E

For the 420 HD8s, the damper is AUC 8110
For the E HD8s, the damper is AUC 8115

IIRC the 420 and the E have the same venting with respect to the damper cap, but I'm not certain.

The 420 and MkX dashpot necks are taller, hence the longer damper rods. The springs and some other parts are different too.

Hi, Definitely spindle shaft seals. Use the rubber ones not the cork.
