Gearbox bellhousing

Hi

I made a post a few weeks ago regarding obtaining a manual gearbox and bell housing for a series 2 2+2

I have now managed to get hold of a gearbox via ebay, a manual box, please see images.

The bell housing has C14444 cast inside the casing.

I have also obtained a 133 tooth flywheel

Couple of questions, does anyone know if my flywheel will work with this bell housing?

And also what type of starter motor I require? the one I have at the moment is from an auto and it does not fit.

Any help much appreciated.

Hi Peter....the bell housing looks wrong for a 4 syncro gearbox....look at the circular recess on the back of the bell think it should be approx 4 1/4 in diam to match the large bearing on the front of the gearbox.....also the holes for the starter motor in the bellhousing are not recessed to take the spigot plate for the 4.2 starter....a 133 tooth flywheel is correct...your starter for you auto should be ok if you get the correct bell ....your current starter works on a 133 tooth flexplate (flywheel) have a look at this post it shows the different recesses on the bellhousings viewtopic.php?f=3&t=12570&p=101922&hili ... ng#p101922

Hi Steve,

Yes just checked, your right, the person I bought it off sold them as a "pair" although they came in separate packages and I have not tried "mating" them until now.

Just mailed the seller.

Just eyballing it I reckon that bell will fit on the front. I've recently had to machine a Moss box bell to fit an all synchro box. It'll be easy to check because it will either fit over the bearing and split ring or it won't. If it doesn't all is not lost; see my thread on machining the bell.

Steve: I wasn't aware of the issue with the starters. I thought the only problem was if the cast recess for the preengaged starter pawl was too small with the really old Moss bells. Do I need to recess the starter holes as well?

Hi Andrew...the 4.2 starter should have a spigot plate that fits between it and the bellhousing....the plate is located to the bell by ring dowels that fit in the recesses to position it correctly.....not sure if you use a high torque starter if they use the spigot plate....i know that Fossways have a large selection of starters that can be used for mis matched bells and flywheels.....Steve

Hi guys,

Thanks for the feedback, glad I posted the pictures.

The seller on E bay does have the correct bell housing, he is sending a replacement

Maybe my existing starter motor will fit this when it arrives

Peter..dont forget the spigot plate....it could be stuck to the starter or the bellhousing you will need to reuse it and the small ring dowels... post a photo when you get the replacement becaus it is possible to get a bellhousing with the larger circular machining for the gearbox bearing but not have the small recess for the ring dowels.....Steve
