Diffs and Brakes

Hi Sage ones,

My winter project on the S2 is to rebuild the irs. To that end I acquired a 3.07 PL diff and brakes from what I suspect was an XJ6. The hand brake is cable operated and looks much better than the strange contraption normally fitted. My question is, is it possible to use this hand brake mechanism on the E type? I guess the cable might be an issue(much shorter run) but I could make one up. I'm adding a couple of pics of my project which I've just finished painting in my rather small garage.

Hi Steve,

I removed six rats nests three of which came out of the front bulkhead! Rat pee is very corrosive. I removed large areas of the box sections and remade the rotten panels. Gaining access to these areas usually requires additional damage, cutting away good metal. Fortunately there wasn't much good metal so I could proceed with impunity. All the floors and sills including those in the boot area were toast. The box sections are all clean and strong now and full of wax oil. All things are possible.

I really didn't think anyone would be interested. I only put some pics on because I noticed those posts tend to get a reply. Which I still haven't got! Any way here's another before and after pic. The colour is opalescent silver blue which doesn't really show up very well in pics but it's a lovely colour.

No reason why you cannot use the mechanism provided the original handbrake supplies sufficient movement. The original mechanism does not appear to be available but SNGB offer an upgraded part for £120. https://www.sngbarratt.com/uk/#!/Englis ... 15d4c97b5e

Super door fit, but have you allowed for the weight of the glass and fittings, if they are already bolted up.

I believe on fitting an empty door, you need to add about 3.5kg into the door as you bolt it up, otherwise it will sag and ruin your fit, after you put all the bits into it. HTH.

The pictures I've been showing are largely for reference. For instance that pic of the left rear quarter was taken because I had to do so much work on it. Water had got into the fuel filler box rotted through and into the wing. I made a new fuel box and had to creat a wing repaire section about 10 inches by 8 which runs from the fuel filler hole down to the seem. Making double curvature sections like that is tricky and requires some more 'traditional' metal working skills but it is doable. The deep reflections in that pic will show up any imperfections. That's why I took the picture. The door fit is reasonable considering how much metal work has been done. And yes the doors were rotten too, requiring the bottom four inches of the skin and numerous other repairs.
