#1 Fuel leaks from the tank

Post by Polse7317 » Sun Feb 17, 2019 12:22 pm

I have 3 fuel leaks from my tank :
1 : from a bolt with its copper washer
2 : from the hole where the electric pump wire goes in the tank
and
3 : from the fuel sender

Image
The leak 3 is because i have tightened too much and the rubber joint is broken
the leak 1 may be is because i have only one copper washer and the bolt can't be tightened enough ( another thread has solved that point)
But How can i stop the leak from the 2 ? i Don't want to torque too much the bolt where the wire goes in…. Some one has an idea ….?

Not sure how the seal is provided on the cable but I would guess that under the nut there will be a rubber washer\gland that seals around the cable. Wise to check this is not cracked or perished. There may also be washers too. What ever seal is there be sure that sealant compounds will probably not work for long. Petrol eats most sealant compounds.

1. You could try 2 copper washers. You could try softening the copper by annealing it; heat to red heat and allow to cool.

2. Do you have a SNG Barratt new pump fitted? These all leaked from the gland around the wire. SNGB replaced the one I bought with another one that they had sealed differently.

3. Get some ThreeBond 1104 Neo sealant. See if this will save your fuel sender gasket. If not use another gasket. You can use this sealant on the copper washers for the pump as well.

Hi Andrew , as you say: i have a new SNG fuel pump....... so i didn't knew there was a problem with the gland, i'll try to have a new "new" one ! i'll test also your "trick" about annealing the copper washer. and i have ordered the sealant fuel resistant.... :salute:

About the pump change, SNG BARRATT France said they can't do anything because i bought the pump 8 years ago...... They are right but the pump began its work on the road 3 months ago....! So i will test the sealant and be sharp eyed on the leak .... :fingerscrossed:

I was the first to discover the leaking gland on the submersible fuel pump. I worked with SNGB to find a fix. More information here:

You really need to get the gland fixed as no amount of sealing with epoxy will stop the leak. Contact SNGB UK or PM Julian Barratt and ask if they can supply you with the revised gland or maybe take your pump in for service for a fee.
