I have seriously improved my E-Type!

Hi,

I have improved my E-Type by inventing a special bolt to fix the lower part of the air dustbin:


This is the upper side of the bolt: UNF:


This is the lower side: UNC and the seam I made:


Main idea was to invent a bolt which cannot turn when I loosen the centre nut inside the dustbin. And I do want to be able to remove the dustbin for when it‘s time to change the oil filter. But I do not want to remove the wheel arch protection sheets to be able to take out the dustbin, so a simple „use a screw and a nut“ - approach would not provide a solution.

So I made this:

It‘s an ex-exhaust manifold bolt, on which I welded a flat washer. I structured the welding on the underside, so that it gave kind of a seam / to fit into the slot of the retainer „bridge“ inside the sill.

I fitted the twin bolt from below with a UNC nut, and a washer. It can slide a bit inside the cutout in the carrier.

But it cannot rotate because of the „welded seam“on the underside. On top of the retainer bridge, there is the flat washer, so that the dustbin does not gain any hight (which is important), but the bolt would not fall through. Inside the dustbin I used a thick washer and a UNF nut.

Job done... if you take out the UNF nut in the dustbin, you can take the dustbin out of the car. The bolt stays in place, is a bit adjusteable, and can be removed if needed, by unscrewing the nut from below.

Clever fix for that irritating problem Carsten.
FWIW, my solution was to use one of those white nylon square plug nuts that hold mini headlamps in place. And a self tapping panhead screw + washer. It's designed for square holes and is split at the back so it expands when the screw goes in, like a Rawlplug. And it happens to be a perfect press fit into the slot.
Just a suggestion for those without welding gear...

My solution was not to use one at all! The PO thought likewise.
I found that the air filter dustbin sits firmly enough on the sill cross bar without it. I do however use two pieces of U shaped rubber gasket to stop the lower rim scraping the paint off the frame.

It ‘happens to be a perfect press fit in the slot” because it is the part Jaguar themselves used.

The slot is designed for part 8, plate 8 spares book J38.
Carsten doesn’t use it much

That part is the small square nylon nut clipped into millions of headlamp bowls and hundreds of millions of cars to attach the numberplate to slots in sheet metal.

Unclip lid, remove filter, unscrew self tapper...

Every dustbin-equipped E I have had used such a plastic nut.

I wanted something made from iron and look like it was made in the midlands :-)

In my car, the plastic part was missing, I could not find it at SNG, so a quick thought and „gimme the welding gun“- and thats it.

And afterwards I thought you might like it...
