I am rebuilding the original engine for 9 WYO, an late 1969 S2 FHC 4.2.
You might think all 4.2 main bearings are the same, but the ones I sourced for this job do not fit.
I am using a low mileage STD crank from an S2 Daimler saloon circa 1976.
John, my engine builder has discovered the later crank has a scroll on the end journal which interferes with the standard bearings that I had had sitting on a shelf for years.
The number on the mains box is H1198/7 STD
AEM 7294
Anyone know what bearings I need, or better still a UK ebay link so I can buy them now?
Did they change for the 70's Jags? Have I a set of very early 4.2 bearings?

Hi James,
I could be wrong, but I am fairly sure all 4.2 cranks are interchangable.
I am not sure if this will help, but I bought a new crank from SNG which has a 10/69 stamp on the box MOD old stock I believe and it is identical to my 65.

And this is an XJ6 crank:

I think I have a bearing box in the garage; I will dig it out if it helps.
Regards,
Paul

Somewhere on the crank you have ( probably on one of the webs ) will be the number of the engine it was originally fitted to. This will tell you exactly what the crank was intended for , which may not have been the 1976 car at all ! I am very surprised that you have a mismatch, because as others have said all 4.2 cranks should be interchangeable . Whatever crank you use, don't overlook the fact that pulling the gallery plugs in the crank pins and cleaning the galleries out is mandatory

Couldnt find a number on the crank.
The problem is that one pair of bearings seem to have a misaligned tab.
Although the bearing locks into place, the bearing sits too far to the right.
The rest are ok.
The affected bearing is the end one near the flywheel. In other words the one that does all the work.
It pushes the bearing into the radius of the crank and the oil hole is misaligned.

Just spoken to David Manners,
They list one bearing set for all the 4.2 engines, so just bought a new set for £43.
These ones must be wrong.
I will compare when the new ones arrive.

Hi James,
Have you put the cap bearings in the block? I think they are different.
The bearings that sit in the block are the ones that should have the grove down the centre of them, as in my picture above.
And the bearings in the centre are different from the ones at each end.

Hi Paul,
They have been tried in all the combinations.
The rogue pair sit too far forward in all the positions unfortunately.
