radio console speaker panel trim

Forgive me if I am being stupid, but I have just discovered that my radio console is missing amongst other things the speaker trim panels BD26202/3.
What exactly are they for?
The frame assembly is shaped like this:

at over £100 the pair.
would it not be virtually the same, to just cover the frame with vinyl, or am I missing something (other than the trims of course)
