#1 Brake servo heat shield

Post by malcolm » Tue Jul 16, 2019 3:09 pm

Anyone got a picture of how this is fitted on a S2 2+2? I'm referring to the heatshield that fits between the exhaust manifold downpipes and the servo on the near side.
There's nothing on my car, and I'm told I should have one otherwise I could cook the servo.
Any help or thoughts much appreciated!

Thanks Steve. Need to get myself a chunk of Ally! Couldn't understand the one at SNG - looks like it allows for things being in places I haven't got things! I'll find a sheet of aluminium and have a go.

Fosseway do a nice one at a price !
I got mine from Dave Kerr on this forum. Significantly cheaper, fits well and has the heat reflective coating which you need.

If you're going to make your own, I'd suggest using stainless steel sheet rather than aluminium. Plenty of choice on eBay.

Another option is Zicoflex or similar. Very easy to trim to size and might do a better job as a heat shield.

There are two versions - the one for LHD cars also protects the brake fluid bottles. The RHD one only needs to protect the servo. I thought SNG stocked a RHD version?

David, The only one sng had to show me was the one incorporating brake bottle protection - all sorts of cut outs and looked odd.

Lots of good ideas, thanks. The Fosseway looks good but is very expensive! I've tried looking for Dave kerr, but can't find him. How do you search a specific member?

Did that Steve, but you can't then put in a members name. You can put in "D" and get hundreds of D's, but couldn't see a Dave Kerr, and similarly for K's. They are avatar names I think, in order of joining but not alphabetically - unless I'm doing it wrong!

Thanks Steve!

Meanwhile, I spent a long while on the phone with a helpful guy at SNG. He confirmed the LHD shield was the only one listed, and it's not listed under "heatshields". He looked again, and eventually found a RHD version with correct fittings in the exhaust component section in his book.

Malcolm,
My bag of nail hasn’t had that heat shield for all the 16 years and 60,000miles I’ve owned it. Not sure what the shield was supposed to protect, but it ain’t been missed yet. My car is also missing all the exhaust heat shields underneath the body, except the ones over the two main silencers. These appear only to function today as soakaways for engine oil.

Thanks Chris, I similarly have never had one fitted before. However, it is apparently there to stop the servo overheating which can cause the brakes to bind/seize. I'm told reliably that I should have one, so I'm doing it before my Pyrenees trip, rather than risk getting stuck halfway down a mountain.

It is indeed a vital safety feature that should be fitted to all 4.2 cars. Today it would have been the subject of a recall and Jaguar clearly considered it to be enough of a problem to design and produce a very comprehensive kit of 30 parts. Fine if you don't want to fit one Chris but you should not be encouraging others to do the same.

My own experience was during a trip to the south of France in 2010 where ambient temperatures were 35°C+. In slow moving traffic or in towns I started experiencing a 'sticky' brake pedal and it would not release fully. The problem disappeared once we hit the open road so I decided to investigate further. I found the servo was getting too hot to touch so I was circumspect for the rest of the trip. Discussing the problem on the Forum we realised I and several others were missing the servo shield (discarded when fitting a new exhaust apparently) but the parts were not available from the usual's. Dave Kerr, who was already making exhaust shields, offered to make some servo shields and I fitted one; never had a servo problem since. Word got around and both Fosseway and SNGB started offering their own shields.

Essential to fit one if yours is missing!

I have the Fosseway version fitted. Not cheap but, as with everything from them, a fine piece of precision engineering.
