fly wheel timming marks

#1 fly wheel timming marks
i have a friend who has completely rebuilt a serise 1 4.2 fhc every nut and bolt over three years .now has come the time to set the engine up after all the cams cranks valves rings have been done .but the problem is there are no markings on the fly wheel the two lugs are there but that can go on iether way whitch would be 180deg out , has anybody ever come accross this problem before and is there a light at the end of the tunnel

Hi the 4.2 Ser I E type has the timing marks on the crankshaft damper at the front of the engine. These should be aligned to the timing pointer which should be attached to the front of the sump.
If the pointer is missing give me a shout as this is one of the many parts that i have had remanufactured.

The timing marks do not settle this problem because with the pointer at TDC on the damper it can relate to either no 1 ( rear) or 6 ( front) firing. If the cam covers are off, there is no problem : with the pointer at TDC the valves of the NON-firing cylinder will both be slightly open. If the cam covers are on, then I suggest you get someone gently to turn the engine over on the front pulley bolt, when you will be able to feel whether it is no 1 or 6 on the compression stroke by putting your thumb over the spark plug hole. Whiver is on compression is coming up to firing, and you can affix the flywheel accordingly
