Fuel pipe routing

The fuel line is clipped on to the underframe with the following set of clips:

C.3727 Clip, securing Petrol Pipe to Wheel Arch 2 - same as on XK cars
C.10268 Clip, securing Petrol Pipe to Underframe 4 - newer type
C.1040/9 Clip, securing Petrol Pipe to Underframe 1 - clip for small screw
C.1040/12 Clip, securing Petrol Pipe at Reservac Tank Mounting 1 - clip for 1/4" bolt

I have 2 questions:
How is the pipe routed in the back? Is it routed with a sharp bend in front of the stabilizer:


Or behind the stabilizer?

I have looked at about 10 cars, and about 5 have it one way, next 5 have it the other....

My second question is related to the clip: is there a clip here? I have only 2 poor photos:




I had no clip on my car...

As a S3 owner I hesitate to enter the dangerous world of S1 originality but as no one else has responded here goes.

I have a few images showing the ARB v fuel pipe routing area. Discarding those where replacement piping is evident, this leaves twelve images with what look like original pipework in situ. Seven are 3.8s (4 OTS+3 FHC) with build dates from Aug'61 to Nov'63 and five 4.2s (3 OTS+2 FHC), with build dates of Sept'64 to Apr'66, all are LHD.

The seven 3.8s all have the fuel line positioned identically, under the ARB. The five 4.2s all have it over the ARB with identical shaping of the pipe to bend sharply around the floor and rise between the bodywork and the ARB. The closest image I have to the 4.2 launch date in Oct 1964 is that of the 53rd 4.2 LHD OTS, built on 8 Sept 1964 which shows the "new" run over the ARB. Images up to Jan70 also show this run.

As there is a gap from the last 3.8 image of Nov63, to the first 4.2 of Sept 64, I cannot say for sure the change occured with the introduction of the 4.2 but it seems likely given the above and is also reflected in a change of part number for the pipe between 3.8 and 4.2.

I think the 4.2 used a copper tube while the 3.8 used plastic.
Hence the nice bent on the 4.2..

For a S3 owner you do have a very nice S1 photo database!.. :-)

BTW The later type fuel pipe looks like cad plated steel rather than copper.

You seem to have a great photo database :-) Maybe I could ask you for one more research..

There are 2 brake clips C18461:


I think these are standard P clips and I think there is one here:



However, I have no idea where is the 2nd one. Any ideas?...

Hi Tadek,
I certainly don't have a database, that would imply an organised system!
I had a look at the clips visible on images showing the brake pipe running along the chassis rail. No "P" clips are visible, only the four C5023 clips.
The Parts Manual lists 2off C18461, described as Edge Clips but as you will know only shows one in the diagram, item 40. If a second one was used, it must be before the pipe goes under the car and inspection will show if/where it is needed.
RHD cars use two clips, item 36 (different part number to LHD) but both are visible on the diagram in the Parts Manual.
You could try jag-lovers as there will a lot more knowledge on that forum of the details of LHD cars.
