I was just looking at pics of my dads old c type and I noticed the exhaust manifolds where not swept down like the production xk engines manifolds
They were more straight out and then to flexible down pipes to a side pipe that came out on the passenger side
The pipes went over the frames and down roughly where the brake servo is on an e type
Seems to make sense if you consider exhaust flow
Anyone tried this on an e type?
Jaguar must have had a reason for doing this so why dident they do it on the e type?
Seeing as they were trying to produce the fastest production car of its time
Not sure if the D type was the same
Maybe a production cost issue?
I am fairly sure its a better exhaust system for the engine looking at it
Any thoughts?
Joe

The LWE's had the downpipes over the frames.

Hi Joe...the C type exhaust was a very different setup as you say.....approx 10 years earlier than the E and not designed for road use....just race...hence very noisy.......what C type did your dad have........Steve

#5 Re: C type exhausts
Ahh I should have known someone would have done it
Interesting the lightweight e types had it though
It must be a better way of routing the manifolds then
Otherwise jaguar wouldn't have done it
My dads old car wasent a true c type as you would know it
It was a Tomlinson MRT bird cage c type built in 1953
They built 5 of them for racing
It was an xk120 engine skate/running gear and attached to a birdcage tubular chassis
Looked like a c type but had 2 different bonnets its its time
When my dad had it in the 1970s parked in the front drive of our house in Whitton it had the c type bonnet
But when it was raced it had a few different ones
Probably due to crashes etc
It was raced through the 50s and 60s and driven by Dick shattock as I recall at one point
I think the body was developed by HWM
But can't remember now
There is not much info on them
You can see my dads old car by Googling
Most of the pictures now days are with its different bonnet though
Ruins the lines
Its first three number plate digits were BAC
It came up for sale a few years back and my brother tried to get it back
But the guy wanted half a million for it!
Considering my dad sold it during his divorce for 7 grand thats a big inflation hike
Its an interesting car
Basically at the time if you could not get or afford a genuine factory car you could get the next best thing

Yes thats his old car
Funny to think i used get drives in it
I remember on one outing getting hit up the back by some other driver
And because my dad had no insurance he let the guy off!
Did a fair bit of damage as I recall and the car had to go off for repairs
It doesn't have the c type bonnet on it though like when my dad had it
Although I have seen pictures of it with that bonnet from the 1950s when it was being raced
It looks much better with the c type bonnet
What you can't see from that picture is the rear end which is as near to a c type as you can get
