[edited] Spin on oil filter vs retrofitting OEM filter housing on Series 1
#61 Re: [edited] Spin on oil filter vs retrofitting OEM filter housing on Series 1
I see and I am now puzzled.
On the factory fit there are indeed two pictures showing the bottom plate on the filter housing.
This one for the 3.8:
And that one for the 4.2:
And this is the filter housing I found out when I removed the spin on device:
So should I understand that my filter housing is not a 3.8 one and instead is a 4.2 one with a removeable plate that I would have to source and install or is it a 3.8 one that was butchered?
And if a 3.8 one could I adapt a 4.2 plate on it?

Hello Serge, you have the correct 3.8 filter head just missing the plate. I cannot say how effective (or not) your spin on filter was as I do not know its method of attachment. I will have a look later and see if I have a 4.2 plate to compare with a 3.8 one I know I have in storage.

Many thanks Barrie,
If you have a spare plate, that would be most appreciated.
If not and difficult to find, I will have to machine such a plate from sheet metal, hoping that it can be inserted and fit in the assembly.
Although I may look at my filter housing dimensions, exact dimensions of the plate (outside and inside diameters, thickness) would be very useful

Hello Serge, the photo below shows the different valve housings 3.8, 4.2 (mk2 item not E-type but the plate is the same ) and 4.2 S2 .
The 4.2 has a smaller hole than the 3.8 and could be easily put in a lathe and machined out to match your housing (it would be a press fit so you would need to turn up a fitting tool out of a piece of pipe and you will need a press of some sort)
The dimensions of the 3.8 one are as follows - Diameter 71.5mm
Hole 32.2mm (you would need to adjust to suit)
Material 1mm mild steel and its flat (not concave/convex)
You can make one from scratch quite easily once pressed on the alloy would need to be staked to hold it firmly in position .
The S2 valve block is scrap and you are welcome to it if you want to go that route.

Thank you very much for the infos and measurements, Barrie.
I will try to machine that plate accordingly.
Thank you also for the S2 block offer, I don't think I will need it but in case I keep it in mind.

Serge,
Any suggestions for how to remove the anchor bolt so I can install a spin on filter?
Thanks,
David

Hi David,
What do you mean by anchor bolt: the long bolt that holds and attaches the canister to the filter housing?
If so, best is to first remove the air filter box to get sufficient space to work on the oil filter

I hope the 'anchor bolt' is not the centre boss - as that is part of the casting on a 3.8. I have a 3.8 casting that someone had tried to remove said part with some stilsons and ruined the entire thing. The 4.2 centre boss will come out OK as it is a separate part.
