#1 Fastening crash padding assembly on A pillar?

Post by ysmalkie » Tue Jul 06, 2021 6:27 am

I have been working on my upholstery last months and came to the point where I can install the crash padding. Could anyone help how it is fastened to the A pillar?

I would think the green circles is where the rivets are (riveted from the rubber seal U channel side?)
There are though also 2-3 holes where the red circles are and it seems something was fastened there. What was there?? Could anyone help?

The car is a October '63 car.

Hi Tadek

As far as I understand, whilst the rubber trim channel is fixed by rivets the fixing of the can’t rails and the A post padding as you describe it, is all done with short pan head type screws.
Certainly for me I found this to be the easiest solution and used a variety of different lengths of stainless screws to make up for the varying dimension between the bodywork and I cant rail it self
I also found using the screws very useful because I could gradually and carefully tighten each one little by little to gradually pull the cant rail to a lovely tight junction with the bodywork in a very controlled manner rather than using rivets which are rather success/fail outcome
In the case of the A post I also took the precaution (having firstly created the threads within the crash pad) to then remove the screws and file their ends to be in rounded and blunt, and also make sure that each screw was individually filed to the right length so they didn’t protrude too much into the foam padding

Hope that helps

Jonathan,

I do not see how it can be fixed with the pan head screws in the A pillar section - there is no padding where these screws can go in....

Hi Tadek...yes they are held by self taping screws......a bit more to the right of the green circles in your photo the screws should go through into the thicker padded area.......are these original trims...if so you have existing holes in the A post that line up with holes in the trim panel.....Steve

Steve,

The thick padded area ends where the roof meets the A pillar..
Then (originally) there was a rather thin padded area.
There is no way a screw can go in there, unless it's ultra special, cut for the right length.

I have to dig out the original padding for this to give you an idea..

Hi Tadek....lets forget about the padding......to fix you need to screw through the channel for the seal into the metal of the crash rail.....use screws that are not too long or they will come through you vinyl trim....this was mentioned in a post above about fileing the screws to the correct length.......Steve

Too far in for the grab handle.

I think that's it:

I have found 2 cars on BAT:
Chassis 888959:
https://bringatrailer.com/listing/1964- ... -coupe-12/
Chassis 889433:
https://bringatrailer.com/listing/1964- ... -coupe-13/

They both have it.

My car is a 889348, so right in between them.
They both have the dash scroll finisher.

The more I investigate my interior, the more unique the late 3.8 interior seems to the 3.8.

I thought this was a unique feature of the 4.2...

Many thanks Richard - is there a piece of casing covered with vinyl inside?
Do you have a photo of the original?

Hi Tadek
I think it's better to fit this small parts with countersunk slotted self tapping screws with there screw cup washers.

Late 3.8's have a number of 4.2 features, my '64 3.8 has the scroll finisher, seems it applies to 3.8's with the black vinyl instrument panel.
