Hi Keith.
I can’t recall having to use first around town other than to pull away. Forth gear is responsive and smooth from 30mph. If your car pulls like you say in second, I can’t see you having a problem either.
I changed the complete differential in its case, so it was an easy task. The 2.88:1 diff is much easier to find than the 3.08 (and cheaper) too. I had a removed the rear subframe to overhaul the rear suspension so to me it was the ideal opportunity. Good luck.

I have never found hill starts to be an issue with a 2.88, not even in the black mountains.

I have a v12 HE efi with a four speed and O/D box and a 2.88 diff.....it’s great, any speed you like, any revs you like, smooth but at mid to high revs perhaps a v slight whine, but that’s about it.
Currently though thinking of going down the auto box route due to skeletal problems. The 2.88 will stay!
Although just at the moment as you may notice it’s not quite roadworthy ...
Just finished off my rotisserie,(the straps have gone)...proper legs and castors now!
Tee Hee!

A few runs from Jenkin's Chapel to Pym Chair will bed your transmission in nicely...
I had three years of regular tips from home in Buxton to a major client in Bollington. Range Rover across country, or motorbike on the Cat & Fiddle road (before they installed the cameras). Decisions, decisions.

Thanks all for your very interesting viewpoints. I read that a 2.88 final drive is OK with a wide-ratio box, prefixed KE or KJ as fitted to Series 2 cars, but maybe too tall for a close ratio EJ box as found on a Series 1. My car is a series 1.5 with an EE gearbox! Turns out the EE was the first of the wide-ratio boxes fitted from Oct '67 to March '68, with 2.933:1 in first, so my car should be fine with a 2.88 diff. Another job for the coming winter! Thanks everyone for all the help and advice.
