Propshaft sliding joint gaiter

Hi All

The gaiter on the sliding joint in my prop has perished and detached. I see that Barratts stock them, can someone tell me how it comes off and refits at the shaft end please as it doesn’t look too accessible and seems quite corroded where the sleeve goes in?

The front end yoke is on splines, so mark both shaft and yole for alignment on reassembly, then pull the yoke off, put the new gaiter and any securing ring in place, reassemble with proper alignment and then secure the gaiter

PS I should dress out that dimple in the shaft before reassembly

So the yoke just pulls out of the prop in the same way the flange yoke did, i.e it is splined on both ends?
That’s not actually a dimple on the shaft, there are 4 pressings like that at 90 degree intervals. If you look closely at the second pic you can see two of them.

Before you get too far into this are you sure that sng actually sell that style gaiter and not just the accordian style that uses o rings? If they do sell it could you please list the part number as I could use a new one for my car.

You may well be right, the pic on the website doesn’t look like mine. I think I read somewhere else that there was a problem getting this part, so do you think it would be best to cobble something else to seal / protect the joint? I think someone else mentioned using an old piece of leather or vinyl.

Hi Colin. Yes, there have been a number of discussions about these gaiters over the years. I do not know if there is a specific range of cars that got these gaiters. What year is your car. Mine is a late 1967. The gaiter on mine is still intact and if I can get the splines apart without damaging it I will reuse it. Yours is obviously not salvageable. I would make a circular cut around it and remove the torn part but retain the solid section. A section of bicycle inner tube could then be bonded to the solid section and attached to the other piece of propshaft with a cv boot clamp. I would guess that a tube from one of the fat tire bicycles or even a small motorcycle would fit reasonably. The other option would be to remove the whole piece of the original gaiter and attach the tube to both ends of the propshaft with clamps.

Thanks Geoff, mine’s a 70 S2. I’ll investigate further tomorrow, if I can leave the intact piece of the original gaiter in place I think it would be the best option.

Ah, Colin, maybe I have misunderstood the position - I assumed that this was the front of the propshaft . I can't remember definitely, but I did not think the rear end was splined . Perhaps someone with up to date knowledge will clarify the position
