#1 High Oil Pressure

Post by NATO » Wed Mar 30, 2022 6:31 pm

Hi everyone,

This is my first post on here ! I have just purchased a 1974 OTS RHD UK original car, on collection and driving it home noticed the oil pressure was always high around 80 PSI even when hot.
Having looked through the various posts about oil pressure gauges, I decided to test my sender and gauge against a calibrated pressure source and as you can see it is in fact not that far out.

Sender/gauge reading Calibrated Pressure
40 psi 45 PSI
60 PSI 55 PSI
80 PSI 80 PSI

Therefore is there a maximum pressure or is it a case you can never have enough !
I read on one of the the posts the PRV is set at 75 psi so it looks like that is doing its job.

Any thoughts ?

Cheers Neil

Hi Nato, welcome. What is the situation if you look through the oil filler in the valve train area, are the cams swimming in it?

Next question is what grade oil is in there and also with the fast exchange of oil to sump is the engine running temp lower than usual.

The oil pump works.
The gauge and sender appear to work give or take 10%.
It looks like the pressure relief spring also works, but you are worried that it is a little stiffer than most.

If you are really worried, hook up the pressure relief spring to your compressor and confirm it caps the oil pressure at 80psi rather than the gauge not accurately reading higher than 80psi.

Remember most people aren't even on a forum, so we have no idea what the vast majority of cars are doing - we only hear about a tiny proportion which are unmaintained.

kind regards
Marek
