#1 Fuel filler cap fit.

Post by Magnidec » Sat Apr 30, 2022 5:34 pm

Hi to all,
Could somebody tell me if the fuel filler flap on the early 3.8 Series 1 E Types were the same shape for the Roadster and the Coupé or was there a small difference ? My car has a replacement rear wing (Coupé) but the filler cap fit is not much short of shocking. It fits, but the outline of the flap doesn't really match the recessed pressing in the wing. Anyone have any ideas. Thanks in advance.

There were two styles of 3.8 FHC's with totally different body shapea; changed June 1962 with six pages of new parts The filler cap was one of them. Check the SPC and compare part numbers for FHC and OTS filler caps which will give you a definitive answer.

Again, check the Spare Parts Catalogue as it has everything you need. I could do it in a couple of minutes but I can't be bothered as, obviously, you can't. 🙄

Maybe you two should swap filler lids?

Dont think so, it narrows toward the front same as Magnidec's.

It's not that, just always thought that was an original poor fit. There's a risk of importing from the UK and still ending up with the incorrect part. It's the sort of part one needs to have in hand to see if it fits.

Thanks David, it'd be handy if someone could post a picture of the correct later version, the front edge looks to be slightly rounded and wider than the one pictured.

Thanks guys, I wasn't particularly looking for one, I just happened to see Magnidec's picture which is similar to mine. A search on the forum under the part no only yielded the recent posts above. I'm quite capable of doing searches, on this forum, in the Spare Parts Catelouge and the usuals' sites. I've looked at a lot of pictures and many of them don't fit very well. I'm sure mine is original, under PO resprays it still had the factory colour paint and primers.

Thank you all, Richard Smith is significantly cheaper than SNG but wont ship overseas. Economics dictate I'll live with what I've got for now.

Just for interest, here are some pics of mine. As you can see it bulges higher than the curvature of the wing, and has uneven gaps.

I agree, that's atrocious! No offense intended, but it looks like some kind of a metallic tumor.
