yes I did Dave - they were the ones that have the 1200T but not any 1200LT's...

I am just not sure about the unusual look of the SBS40's so I am beginning to think you have shares in their company of something

I might evolve in that direction as my car is far from standard but I will see what else is around over the weekend.

£128 *IS* a reasonable price though and I could cover it with a black plate for aesthetic reasons... oh dear am I starting to convince myself....

Or, you could paint it black with some POR15 and you wouldn't have to worry about it rusting.

If I was going to invest in a Company it would not be one whose batteries last 12+ years, I would put my money into one of the CMO* companies who sell the 'original specification', aka replace frequently, batteries. As long as it consistently starts the car, who cares? Just think in 12 years time will you really be worried about what colour it is or where the terminals are! I was thinking of ordering a replacement SBS40 two years ago 'in case it went wrong' but as my wife pointed out "it's only a battery, move on".

Still hanker after a spare shiny SBS40 though - I am willing mine to fail

Nope not yet - what are the details of the battery you refer to?

I have found a number of batteries that will fit, have the terminals in teh right place and are black but they mostly had a low CCA so I rejected them

Chris, if you talk to John, he sells batteries for a living and is also the Chairman of the JDC E Type Register. He has researched what modern battery would be most suitable (bearing in mind it is quite a small battery with a high output) and can supply you with all the details (I can't now as I removed all the stickers from the one I have so it is just a plain black box now).

Feeding back....

I met with John Burton tonight as he lives reasonably close and was convinced enough to buy a battery from him.

It is black, has the terminals in the right place, sealed for life, 13 plate battery. Guaranteed for 5 years with a life expectancy of 10 years. The stickers peeled off easily leaving me with a nice clean look.

John swears by them for all etypes. Total cost was ?93 inc tax.

Interestingly he told me NOT to use a battery conditioner on it as it shortens the life expectancy. His recommendation is to disconnect the earth over winter and says it will hold its charge with no problem.

Some of you may argue about that - i cant comment, merely passing on his advice. But it has a visual indicator which tells you if it needs charging...

I have read the posts on here as I was looking for a battery for my '68 car, and thought I would offer my up to date info, which really just backs up what has gone before. I managed to get in touch with John Burton, via the JDC magazine contact info. He is still able to supply, from stock, a battery which is black, "rubber" case and is fitted with 13 plates per cell. He can supply with the terminal posts either way round, so as to suit various models. It is sealed, so shouldn't leak and the cost is a very reasonable £95. For US owners, it is made by a US company called Voltex so should be available there also, and looks like they may have a plant in Aus too. One very minor problem was that I had to trim some small ribs on the corners to allow the steel clamp ring to sit nicely, but this just took a couple of minutes, and is hidden by the ring anyway. This is the 4th battery my car has had in 51 years, and part of the secret to that is to fit a battery cut off switch, and use it every time the car is garaged. After all, in the UK you never know when the next dry day is coming to bring it out again!
Hope this helps!

I purchased a John Burton battery a few years ago but it is a very tight fit. I had to remake the retaining pins as flat plates with a threaded section welded at the top for the wing nuts to squeeze them in.

Suggest you carefully check the width available in your battery compartment. Could be down to a few millimeters. Let's face it the bodyshells weren't built with precision!!

Contact John Burton of the JDC E Typ Register. He can (or could) supply you with a modern, sealed battery, correct size with terminals on the inside. Plain black.

I have one and they are really good.
I was round his house last week and fitted one of his batteries. He has the same batteries with terminals inside or outside according to what you want and the fittings. Battery has loads of oomph and sits perfectly in the cradle. £94
