Hi guys.. 69 E type going through a full restoration here’s hoping I haven’t messed this up.!
In my quest for a leak free engine whilst rebuilding the engine I opted for the Teflon from oil seal. Purchased from Sng it looked like a straight forward replacement from the old seal albeit a lot more expensive.
Anyhow all rebuilt ready to go in and I stumble across varying degrees of chat about its not a straight forward swap after all ..
I’ve literally swapped it like for like, kept the slinger distance piece etc and all looked really good, now I’m reading the slinger should go if you use this seal..
Please anyone done this upgrade and left the slinger in as it was intended..
Many thanks guys

Hi Paul,
The oil slinger needs to be removed as the new seal actually requires oil to reach it to help its lubrication. In removing the slinger, you also need the slightly longer distance piece with the internal o-ring.
I’ve now fitted three and all are completely leak-free.
Not sure how the slinger will reduce its efficiency or even it it will in fact reduce its life??
Maybe someone else has fitted the new seal plus slinger and travelled many leak-free miles??
Hope this helps.

Yep, I made that mistake and now have about 20,000 miles with no leak.

I also replaced a front seal on an xj6 with the teflon one without any other changes. Drove it for over 5 years with no leak.

Thanks guys and sorry for the late response.. I spoke to Rob Beere who I’ve had quite a bit to do with in this rebuild, he said leaving the slinger on will not make a jot of difference, he said it doesn’t really work anyhow, fingers crossed on start up then !
