#1 Gearbox internal compatibility

Post by 66an » Tue Oct 25, 2022 7:41 am

Hello

I have an EJ gearbox with new bearings that in my opinion is to noisy on the first three gears.
I have now the possibility to buy a JBN box with OD. It´s an all synchro from an S-type.

My plan is to pick the gears from the JBN and put them in my EJ box. I am aware of the difference in mainshaft and gear ratios.

Will the gears fit in an EJ box?

But what about the internal compatibility between this two boxes? Will my plan work?
All things are possible, but I doubt it.

E type gearboxes are intrinsically noisy; it's part of their charm.

The JBN box seems to be in good condition so can´t get this idea out of my head. And it will soon be gearbox/engine out anyway.
Its a friend of mine who owns it, I have the box on my workbench for inspection already.

I´m thinking of picking the gearkluster/gears and depending on condition, perhaps the syncro parts.

Is there anyone familiar with these boxes in detail?

Hello Mats,
There is noise in the first three gears and not fourth, because in fourth gear, no gears are under load as its a direct drive via the fourth gear synchro through to the Main Shaft.

With regards to the Gear Ratio difference, it just means that you will have to swap the Lay Cluster Gear along with the three gears. I would also carefully compare the condition of the alternate Reverse Idler Gear and Reverse Gear with your existing gears. The Reverse Idler Gear in your existing Gearbox will have bedded itself in with the Lay Cluster Gear and having it run with a different Lay Cluster may result in noise from that area. The Reverse Idler Gear is a common source of noise at the best of times.

All of the gears from the alternate Gearbox will assemble with the shorter, Main-shaft of your existing Gearbox.

Regards,

Bill

Thanks for the answer Bill. Much appreciated!
