#1 Hinge Pillar and Door Frame Seal Directions

Post by Phil P » Wed Jul 10, 2024 7:27 pm

Hi,
I've just fitted the hinge pillar complete with seal.

I'm wondering what people's thoughts are on the direction of the seals for the hinge pillar and the rear of the window frame where they meet. I've fitted the seals in the hinge pillar with the curve inwards but wondered which direction that in the frame should be to provide best sealing.

Your experiences are appreciated.
Thanks,
Phil

I wondered if anyone has had chance to look at how their car's seals are configured?
Thanks,
Phil

Many thanks Steve.
I'll have a look at Angus's web-site but am struggling to find a FHC in the factory fit section.

Phil

Hi Steve... It's the B Post but called hinge pillar in the parts catalogue. I've attached a couple of photos. I've put the seal in the pillar so that it is curved into the inside and will have a wiping effect when the door closes. My feeling is that the the one in the door should be opposite to this with the curve to the outside but I wanted to check whether that is right.
Thanks for your help.
Phil

Hi Simon,
Thanks for the photos. It looks as if your hinge pillar seal has the tip pointing towards the outside. Which way does the corresponding door seal face?
Sorry for the rough sketch; combinations in the photo -- looking from above.
I've still got to decide on the interior colour... your red looks good.
Yours,
Phil

Hi Phil,

Mine is as per your No. 4.

I trimmed the edge of the door seal to fit.

Hi Simon,
That's great information and just what I was looking for. I now need to simply change the direction of mine to reflect yours and from what you say may need to consider trimming the door edge seal.
Many thanks,
Phil

No.2 is closest to correct, but your dwg isn't. The lip protrudes from the inner or outer edge of the frame, not the center as you show. You're also assuming you have wide gap between the pillar & door frame. You're likley to find that gap is only about 5mm, so your door won't close the way you've got it. Trial fit your door frames first to see what you're dealing with.

Many thanks to Steve, Simon and Randall for their help.
I popped over to Hutson's in Bradford today to pick-up some parts and Andy showed me an S1, FHC where the configuration of the seals was as No. 2 in my sketch. My feeling is that as Randall has suggested, you trial fit the frame and then try the options to see which works best as the seals fairly quick to refit with the help of a lolly stick!
Thanks again.

Hi, I'm currently facing a similar issue. Have you now fitted the seals as in no. 2 on your drawing? Do you have a picture of the top edge of the door and the window seal at the top?
Thanks, Klaus

Hi Klaus,
I haven't fitted the seals yet as I am having difficulty with the window frame- it fitted nicely when trial fitted before installing the door wiper seal but now I can't get it to slide down to the waistline location.

Anyway, I removed the chromed hinge pillar (B Post) and cut a section of the seal to show how it will be fitted.
The photo is the LH hinge pillar, taken from the top and looking forwards to the front of the car. The seal in the door window frame will be the reverse of this direction.

I think that a slightly longer seal would be helpful and at least that could be cut-down to size.
Sorry that I can't help more.
Yours,
Phil
