#1 FHC Series 1 or 1.5?

Post by Dr.No007 » Sun Jul 14, 2024 4:18 pm

...and the search for a series 1.5 E-Type remains exciting. I have now been offered an E-Type FHC here in Germany. The car has a chassis number of a Series 1 car (1E31xxx) and a Heritage certificate that matches the chassis number (and all other numbers) and shows a Series 1 car from October 1966. Visually, however, it looks more like a Series 1.5, especially in terms of the interior. How can something like this be explained from your point of view? :scratchheadyellow:
I would be grateful for any tips. Klaus

There was no such thing officially as a Series 1.5, so the heritage certificate will likely just say Series 1.

All in all, a confusing story. The "Date of Dispatch" of the car was October 1965 (series 1), the first registration in 1968 (series 1.5). Mysterious....

According to my bible, a 1E31xxx car is some way before any changes made which we now call 1.25 or 1.5 cars.

That is absolutely correct. So I'm surprised that the car looks completely like a series 1.5, which also matches the registration year 1968.

Obviously something odd here....it could be a 68 car that's taken the identity of a 66 car....stolen?..faked?..we would need a lot more info....is the car on xkedata.....if the car your looking at dosnt match its identity then something is very wrong......Steve

So you've seen the Heritage certificate and chassis, engine, gearbox and body numbers match....so its a 66 car....the title date is 68.. xke data says the interior was changed.....bonnet /headlamps from a later car....Steve

What's on the Heritage certificate...some cars were purchased and used in the UK then shipped back to US hence a later title date

Here is the Heritage certificate and the chassis number as far as it is recognisable....

So now it's a 65 car?..have you found the body number on the car....is the engine number that's in the car the same as on the certificate....the stamped in chassis number would be better to look at if you cleaned off the paint with thinners photos it and view in high resolution

From a cursory look at what you have I think this car has been in an accident and has been rebuilt with parts from another, later car.

Or it is a completely different car with earlier ID numbers attached.

I would not buy it if originality was a concern to you.

I think it has a series 2 dash and radio console too.

So it's far from original but could still be a good car, provided it isn't a cut and shut or a "ringer".

Regards
Stuart
