#1 Door pops open

Post by andrewh » Mon Sep 02, 2024 5:48 pm

I have searched the forum but cannot find much on this subject. So after a few miles of driving for no reason , such as a bump, the drivers door pops open onto its safety catch. I have studied a spare door catch mechanism I have, and see that as you shut the door the toothed wheel is rotated and no doubt is locked inside the mechanism. This mechanism could be worn I suppose, but since when the wheel is rotated into the locked position, it still has a small amount of back and forth movement, something else clearly locks the door closed. Is this the spring loaded slide in the catch on the B post? Could this be not quite working as intended? More door alignment is as good as its possible to get an E type, and I am not keen on messing around with the adjustment without knowing for sure which item is likely at fault, the door mounted lock mechanism or the B post mounted catch

I have read the manual previously but I think that relates to the push button. Handles and locks are brand new SNGB and I was told not to adjust the adjuster on the end. There is a possibility that is slightly too far out and in contact with the release lever on the lock. I will re read but interested to see what others know if possible. thanks Andrew

thanks Steve, thats very useful. I am thinking that it could be that the new door handle plunger is not at the 1/32 clearance from the operating lever on the lock mechanism . I shall check that tomorrow.

Ok, I checked the plunger and its in contact with the operating arm of the door lock. Sitting in the car and gently and very slightly pulling the arm resulted in the door opening immediately. Hence I have concluded that the door plunger adjustment is incorrect. The only problem is that even adjusting the plunger fully back its still in contact but not operating the door like a hair spring trigger. I expect the problem with have been solved when I next drive the car, but if not I will need to investigate further. The Manual states that there should be 1/32 in of gap between the plunger and the arm it operates. Thanks for the help Steve.
