#1 Identify This Cylinder Head and Block Please ?

Post by rfs1957 » Fri Aug 15, 2025 4:34 pm

I've been asked by a local French machine-shop to help them identify the provenance of these two parts, and my (already limited knowledge) does not go far beyond 1962 .............

Could sharper/brighter minds tell me what we are looking at please ?

Many thanks in advance.

Hi Rory....7R is a 4.2 S2 block....the head is as would be fitted to a S2 E type...but I think also fitted to some other 4.2 models..Steve ps have a look here to identify the camshafts Camshafts https://share.google/KOlP5hsD7ZXRimntx

Thanks Steve, Dick Maury has indeed published some useful stuff.

Would that number seen stamped on the head, very difficult to read, have originally been the same as the engine number on the block - 7R etc - like my S1 ?

Or to put it another way, the fact they are not the same means they were originally not from the same car ?

It’s something like F ? 8 1 1 on the head, but not stamped where I was expecting it, in the valley at the front between the two camshafts.

Hi Rory...I was incorrect re the F number stamped at the rear of the head....as far as im aware it's thought to be a date code for when the head went through the factory....Steve...ps there is info on JL re this
