Door Window frame fitting
#1 Door Window frame fitting
Getting a bit frustrated with this part of the rebuild and could use some help.
I have the doors fitted to the car with pretty gaps and it shuts nicely on the A,B and sill rubbers.
Next the window frame (which is the original). This fits the door sort of okay but at the front when the door is closed it is nowhere close to the rubber seal previously fitted to the car. I.e. I can easily put my finger between the window frame and where it should be pressing onto the rubber. At the back it is fine - its the front that is the issue.
It looks like it needs to move towards the front of the car and be tilted a lot more towards the top of the car but to get anywhere close i had to remove the brackets (fitted in the bottom of the door) and let the frame swing out until it hit the door skin. But this is STILL not enough.
Looking at a few Etypes today - I can see I am not alone in the problem and there were a few that also had this issue. But some DIDNT....
Any other ideas on how to get the window frame closer to the body seal?
I also note that the window frame seal is much smaller than the original and will never fold onto the body like the original did. Has anyone found window frame rubbers that fit?

Oh Joy
Chris this job is a real bugger. Have you had the frames re-chromed and by chance they've been distorted? They might need bending. The only other adjustments are on the bottom brackets and the spacers at the door top to frame base. I had issues at the rear vertical where it meets the B post. (still not right)
Not sure which rubber you are referring too.

you could be right Lee - it was indeed re-chromed but looked straight. I guess the only way of knowing would be to put the glass in and see if it runs smoothly or not and then twist the frame accordingly

Hi Chris, just about to do this job.Mine was bent, but using a vice with some wood to protect frame bent it back to shape.I layed it on kitchen work surface at different times to see where it needed to be bent, didnt tell the wife.Hope this helps.

The rubber I am referring to in the second part of my question is the rubber that runs around the outside of the window frame which when the door closes has an interference fold against the door frame. The rubber I have is I think wrong and perhaps it should stick straight out from the frame? Or perhaps it has a curve but still sticks out more. You can see the rubber strip I have in the photo below even though I am holding it against the quarterlight post. When it is fitted into the frame not much of it sticks out and it certainly doesn't reach the door frame at the front.
Which reminds me - I am also not entirely sure which way around the rubber seal on the Quarterlight post should be:

Not a good photo but is it this way or does the lip face inwards?

That rubber you have there goes on the window frame on the back edge to meet the rear qtr post.
It should go blunt end facing out so that when the door is closed the flap bridges the gap and rests on the outer edge of the B post chrome. (difficult to explain)
The rubber that goes around the rest of the door frame is different to that with quite a large flap that has only a slight curve.
I need to take a photo of one to show you really

Sorry I see that IS the qtr light rubber in which case it is the right way round
The one that fits on the rear door frame goes the other way round as explained previously

I would still appreciate a photo of the window frame rubber Lee... as the rubber I have for that is exactly the same as the quarterlight post rubber....
Its funny how you get a feeling that something is wrong... now I know the window frame rubber I have IS wrong which is great.
slight change of subject - what did you use in the window channel itself? Is it felt or something similar?

Right pics here
The last picture is of another car on site but the rubber which runs vertical down the back of the frame should be the other way around according to an original car I saw but I have seen many like this one.

Last night I took another look at the frames and placed a known straight edge against the front edge and eureka the frame has been bent outwards at the front during the re-chrome process which accounts for why I could not get it close to the body work. Tonight I will try some gentle persuasion to get it straight again.
The entire frame is still further back from the door frame than I would like so I will also look at what can be done to move it forward a little. There doesn't seem to be much play in the mounting holes.
Thanks to Lee for the Rubber trim supplier who seem to have thousands of profiles to choose from which gives me a little flexibility to obtain the best look/fit.

Chris my frames seem to be too close to the B pillar chrome upright too.
Not sure how to adjust realey cos the frame is a very tight fit in the aperture of the door.
I text you today to let you know that I looked at another FHC today which shows they have used the same right angled rubber on the vertical side of the window frame as the one commonly used on the B post chrome.
Hope that makes sense. The rubbers cross section is a right angle.
Looks like the way to go and bridges the gap

Thanks Lee. I hadnt seen the text but i now have to admit i received it
I think my B Post rubbers are wrong too. Although they are the right shape (sort-of) they are incredibly stiff when in position and the door literally hits them and stops closing so you have to be pretty firm closing it to get to the 2nd stop of the lock (almost a slam which is not what i want)
So I am going to order a few samples from Baines and see what looks right but has more give.
Tonights job is to trial fit the glass and winding mechanism to check I have the frames straight and then see if I can move the whole caboodle forward a few mm so that the front edge looks nicer.

My final rubber choice was IRS1432 but they wanted me to order 50 meters so I am not sure what to go for anymore....
I thin i may to revert to asking professional car restorers what they use :(
