#1 Advice for a novice please!
Hi folks ... I am looking to buy my first classic, namely a Series 3 v12 manual coupe with 42000 miles. I'd be really grateful if anyone can help and give me some of the more obvious things that I should be looking for. The car is being sold by a dealer for ?32K and has been in the same ownership for the last 27 years. Any tips or advice would be great ... thanks!

Yes. Buy a copy of Pete Crespin's book (Pete posts here regularly) as it will be invaluable to you. ?9 from Amazon:

That is VERY expensive for a 2+2. You should be able to buy two for that price in the real world - or close anyhow. Does it REALLY matter to you that one family owned it for 27 of its 40-ish years? Yes, it means hopefully they looked after it, and the dealer back-up (if it exists) could be handy, but you can surely buy very nice cars for 5-10 grand less. That buys an awful lot of V12 petrol* so you could actually enjoy the thing.

*OK, I lied. It buys about 250 miles-worth :-)

I agree with Peter. It sounds like the sort of car that will fetch about 15K - 17.5K at auction . Also check from the chassis no that it is an original manual car ( i.e. make sure it does not have a BW suffix) and it is also worth checking from the number that it is not a LHD/RHD conversion . Although neither of these factors is of utmost importance, they do make a difference to the value, or perhaps 10% in each case . You can get a lot of info from xkedata.com, including the fact that the dealer may have bought it at auction

im selling my s3 v12 for nearly 10k less than that - it really would have to be concours for that sort of money, and like the other guys said there's a lot of decent examples out there for a lot less money.

Yes, but who else besides you has a V12 in 'Patel blue'? Was one of the three owners a newsagent by any chance?snowdmc wrote:im selling my s3 v12 for nearly 10k less than that - it really would have to be concours for that sort of money, and like the other guys said there's a lot of decent examples out there for a lot less money.
