#1 Choke lamp

Post by Mad River » Thu Jul 12, 2012 3:09 am

Ah, yet another new issue! Started the Jag earlier this evening and the choke lamp wasn't working. It's worked perfectly each time I started the car before now. So, I would imagine that the connection on the choke lever isn't making contact, the lamp is burned out or the lamp is no longer making contact with its base. I don't yet have a manual -- so, I would love advice on how to remove the bulb. Can it be done from the front of the dash like the brake warning light on my TR-250 or must one go fishing behind the dash?

Thanks for fielding so many questions! I appreciate it.

#2 Bulb replacement etc.

Post by Northwestern » Thu Jul 12, 2012 8:26 am

Fairly obvious question have you checked the fuses behind the instrument panel? Looks like the bulb is blown. Two ways to get at it, 1. from below by removing the card panel and pulling out the bulb holder, fiddly as you are working blind, look underneath for a green and black wire paired, this leads to the holder which is a push fit into the holder. 2. The other method is by removing the RPM gauge but this is a real hassle and not recommended unless the problem relates to the choke switch and adjustment etc.

The replacement bulb is a clear Edison screw type, 12V 2.2W

The lamp is the most probable cause although there is also a switch at the bottom of the lever which may have failed or become dirty. Switch and lamp are accessed from below the dash panel I can take a photo later as I haven't yet fitted the dash top in the restoration
