Consensus (Haddock and Porter seem to agree) is that only a few of the earliest 3.8 cars had the toolbox in the spare wheel. Later 3.8s and the rest of the cars had a tool roll.

There's an excellent picture on page 24 of Porter's "Original E-Type" book if you have access to that. There's also a decent picture here (bottom of page) which seems to agree with the layout shown in Porter.

In any case, the tool box is pretty to look at but pretty useless if you want it to hold a set of tools which is actually useful at the roadside. When was the last time you set your cam timing by the roadside, or bled your brakes?

As John says the round tool kit tray was only fitted to the very early cars (maybe the first 50 or 100).

S1 Toolkit and S3 Toolkit:

The S2 toolkit could be either of the above depending when the car left the factory. They come up fairly regularly on eBay for about ?500.

#7 feeler gauge

Post by vikla » Sat Sep 01, 2012 5:17 pm

On the subject of toolkits, I'm looking for one of the feeler gauges.

Can someone tell me what are the markings on the e-type one - I understand there is a single digit number on each of the 3 blades.

Also are they specific blades like for valve clearances, etc.

Lastly are they marked Jaguar.

Thanks
Steve

Steve

They are marked 4, 6, and 8 if I remember correctly. Not marked Jaguar.

Yep 46&8 is correct. Not sure about the jaguar badging though.

Has anyone got a totally original full tool set who can advise on the markings on each item? I would be interested to see how much of my set is correct. Not that it ever gets used.

#10 tool kit

Post by vikla » Sun Sep 09, 2012 8:08 am

Chris
I have been trying to put together a toolkit for some time although I am not too concerned if it is not all actually original.
Most of the info I have is gleaned from eBay postings, however some caution is needed because there are many sellers suggesting things are for e-types, when they are not - they do it because anything e-type seems to at least double the price.
I have queried some items in what are being sold as complete, original tool kits when it is obvious that is not the case. Part of the problem is who can guarantee originality of a kit over 40 years old.

My information is:
- the 4 double ended spanners are all marked Jaguar on one side and the makers name on the other. Makers for Jaguar in general could be Snail, TW and SSP. Not sure if any make was exclusive to any particular series of e-type.
- feeler gauge, 3 blades marked 4,6,8. No marking however the body colour is blackish (unusual on feeler gauges)
- 3 part screwdriver is all black and has Jaguar moulded into handle
- contact breaker screwdriver (often a repro item) marked Lucas. Some have 014 and 016 stamped into it, not sure if all should.
- Pliers are marked SSP, I think. Maybe other makers as well?
- box spanners are the unclearest for me about markings - spark plug/cylinder head one has sizes 1/2 BSF (same as 13/16 AF) and 3/4 AF. Seems to be marked on some. Also I think only this box spanner has the larger diameter holes for the long tommy bar.
- Tommy bars, both straight not tapered with domed head - short one is 6 3/4" long, 5/16" diameter, long one is about 9 1/4" long, 3/8" or 7/16" diameter.
- adjustable spanner is 4" and marked Jaguar one side and maker's name the other - Bahco or Garrington
- tyre pressure gauge has the 'wings' Jaguar logo (not Dunlop)
- bleed tube tin - should be Dunlop, not sure about Girling or Lockheed ones
- tyre valve extractor is brass, maybe later ones in yellow plastic
- grease gun, Tecalemit G.C. 3020

Hopefully someone can clarify some of the remarks above.

I have seen the other week a very good looking, complete toolkit not sell on Ebay for ?250. Whilst bidding can go mad for the adjustable spanner and tyre gauge - I saw a tyre gauge go for ?96 (normally about half that). After that screwdrivers and the big box spanner are the expensive items bought as one offs.

Great thanks Steve.

I'll take a look and see what I have in my roll.

Out of interest - if you have been keeping an eye on eBay... what does a complete set normally go for? Are they normally worth more than the ?250 item with no takers? Seems quite a lot of money to me.

Chris

A genuine and complete E-Type toolkit can easily sell for ?500+ and in the past I have seen them go for ?800! There are however many 'composed' sets on offer which use a repro tool roll and various tools which may look correct but are strictly not in terms of markings. There was someone a few years ago selling these on eBay and they were ideal for any owner who did not want to enter a concours competition. I have a repro E-Type tool roll which I picked up cheap somewhere which I have put to good use in the Elan with some appropriate tools, as I already have a complete Jaguar original. If you do a search on eBay completed auctions you will get a feel for the prices being fetched for individual items and complete kits: http://www.ebay.co.uk/csc/i.html?_sacat ... te=1&rt=nc

This one that sold recently for ?250 and looks to be complete but the roll is a replica: http://tinyurl.com/9o7l5xn You can tell because the inside is white whereas a genuine example is going to have brown rust marks and grease stains.

#13 tool kits

Post by vikla » Sun Sep 09, 2012 12:57 pm

I have seen reasonable toolkits go for about ?225 when starting from a low initial bid price.
Earlier today one went for ?115 but with no guarantee on the authenticity and the tools had been spray painted black to look better. That's about the lowest I have seen.

The one David has highlighted in his post did seem to sell on a second go at ?250, but it almost certainly is a 'made up' one with some non-authentic tools. Some people even advertise they do this.
I must say over the last 3 months I haven't seen any at the price levels David is suggesting.
I am now beginning to get the feeling that the prices of e-types peaked last year and are now falling, and that goes for things like tools as well.

Many people probably buy the kits from Jag saloons of the 60s and 70s - lots of Mk2 ones around. Most of the tools were the same, but not so many box spanners. They can go for ?150 to ?200+

Steve

The high prices were achieved over the last three years but probably due, as you suggest, to people trying to put together as complete an E-Type as possible.

Ah I nearly missed an important point in this thread....

Dave you mention that you have an original kit.... can I ask you to verify the item details provided by Steve? or at least ratify what you can of it if you are 100% sure your tools are correct?

It would be nice to have a sticky on the forum that detailed all the right tools for those people collecting them...

I can confirm some of Steve's notations, some differ:

- the 4 double ended spanners are all marked Jaguar on one side and the makers name SSP on the other.
- feeler gauge, 3 blades marked 4,6,8. No marking however the body colour is black gunmetal
- 3 part screwdriver is all black and has Jaguar moulded into handle
- contact breaker screwdriver marked Lucas - 014 and 016 stamped into it
- my pliers are unmarked
- AF box spanners - marked on ends: 7/8" x 3/4", 1/2" BSF x 3/4" AF (large hole) 5/8" x 9/16", 1/2" x 7/16" (small hole)
- Tommy bars, both straight not tapered with domed head - short one is 6 3/4" long, 5/16" diameter, long one is about 9 1/4" long, 3/8" or 7/16" diameter.
- adjustable spanner is 4" and marked 501-094 one side and maker's name the other - Kennedy
- tyre pressure gauge has Patent Number 706356, Other Patents Pending and Made in England, valve extractor screwed into tip - no wings
- bleed tube tin - mine is Girling
- tyre valve extractor is brass
- grease gun, Tecalemit G.C. 3020
- valve timing tool is unmarked

If I had any doubts on provenance it would be the tyre pressure gauge because of the valve extractor and the adjustable spanner because of its mint condition. I bought the complete kit from an old gentleman and ex-E-Type owner about 12 years ago and it had been in his possession since the '60's.

Perfect - Thank you to both Steve and Dave for this information. All I have to do now is find my tool roll amongst all the old bits and pieces. I know its in the loft somewhere...

Looking through my tool roll - i have a couple of differences:

the 4" adjustable spanner says Jaguar on one side and Garringtons on the other but I have a feeling that this is an XK spanner but I am not an expert.

My pliers say "Sheffield England", which I think is correct

My type pressure gauge says Dunlop No.6 so I fairly sure it is just a period piece and not original

I seem to be missing the short tommy bar :(

I have the round type box that sits in the spare wheel recess, and interestingly it has all the markings you have both listed, with only the following being different...

bleed tube tin is Lockheed.

adjustable 4" spanner reads jaguar on one side and GEDORE on the other.

The grease gun also has these instructions wrapped around the gun.
