How are the knurled wiper 'bosses' removed from the spindles (mine have all seen better days!) and are new ones available? [S13.8]
thanks

hi, I'm on about the aluminium splined bits that the wiper arms clamp on to i.e the male splines that match the female splines on the wiper arms.

David
Am writing this whilst out of the country so doing this from memory..there is a cylindrical tube section, cut at an angle which grips the male spindle onto the long flat rack..it will prise off with a flat screwdriver

Does this do the trick..think the male spindle is then released..?

Hope that helps

I've never seen components of the wheelboxes for sale separately. I think the splined boss, spindle, lever and housing are permanently assembled as a unit. Not even sure I've seen the units for sale in isolation for the triple-wiper E-type racks, although I haven't checked.

I tried buy these a few years ago and couldn't you have to buy the whole wiper rack. That was about 6 or 7 years ago.

I bought a few bits at Stoneleigh off other old Jags and removed the spindle which has the splined part attached and fitted it to my original rack.

As for getting them off there is a spring clip inside the wiper arm, you need to release that and then prise the wiper arm off with a flat bladed screw driver. Taking care off course not to damage any paint work.

#7 Wiper Bosses

David,

I've just had a look at the wiper linkage assembly sitting on a shelf in my garage. The splined male bosses you refer to seem to be 'sealed for life' onto their spindles. Each of the spindles on my set have been deformed at their outer end with a centre punch or suchlike to stop the splined bosses from coming off. I can't guarantee they are all assembled like that, as that is the only wiper mechanism I've studied in any detail. If they are, it looks like you'll need to replace the bosses and spindles etc. as a larger sub-assembly.

Jim

The splined 'male bosses' are permantently attached to the spindle on the S2 as well.

I think you will need to replace the whole wheelbox, if they can be sourced individually rather than a new rack.

#9 Splined Bosses

Had a similar problem with my S2 2+2: chrisvine put a great photo on this thread at the URL above for this site. Unfortunately mine are 2 arm non-removable spline shafts but it does give some options.

I have pinned my splined end to the shaft whilst awaiting replacement to arrive.

If the above URL does not work, go to Series 2 forum and look under Wiper Mechanism.

Cheers
Paul
