#1 Series 1 Clutch Slave Cylinder

Post by norman m. macleod » Fri Sep 13, 2013 12:02 pm

Hi All,
Can any one tell me why there are two options listed (by SNG anyway....) for the above. One is C21470 (80mm long), and the other is C29801 (95mm long). What's the difference...? Refrain from telling me it's 15mm, please........
To further confuse me, the Jaguar Spare Parts list I have lists this part as C24145......
I didn't have one on the car (1967 2+2) when I bought it ( in a million pieces.....)
Thanks, and
Best Regards to All,
Norman

There are two types of clutch slave. The short one (80mm) requires a small bracket/return spring and is manually adjustable. The long version (95mm) is the 'hydrostatic' version which is self adjusting and does not need the return spring. You can fit either but you need to ensure you also fit the associated parts - adjustable rod, spring & bracket for the short version; correct rod for the hydrostatic - no mixing and matching under any circumstances. The hydrostatic one was fitted from 1967 onwards IIRC. One suggestion I do have though is to try and buy a NOS Lockheed slave off eBay rather than the repro ones currently on offer. I had two new ones that leaked and I eventually fitted a Lockheed one and that has been perfect. In fact I just bought another NOS boxed Lockheed one that came up on eBay. There is an original Jaguar boxed 80mm one available at the moment which would be worth grabbing: http://tinyurl.com/pb4zlav

Norman

I know this is probably a long shot but did you used to live in Wareside in the UK about 20 plus years ago?

Anyone working on the Clutch Slave might like to know that in an attempt to move the pedals further forward (long legs) I had the 7/8" slave re-sleeved to 3/4", which gives a 28% reduction in travel, albeit with a 28% increase in effort.

I find the heavier pedal - paradoxically - easier to drive with and the shorter pick-up nicer to use, and have now got the clutch pedal at rest some 50mm closer to the bulkhead.

To nit pick , it would be a 36% increase in effort

To nit-pick somewhat more substantially (louse-pick?), the reported change would increase travel, not reduce travel.

I just did what I think was the maths and I got 27.7%

How did you get 36%?

Oh dear, slave, not master was re-sleeved. Rory was right. Duh. Not come across a re-sleeved slave.

Not sure who comes off worse from this exchange.

Christopher is dead right, it's a 36/49 drop in effort if you go from 3/4 up to 7/8 on the slave bore, hence the 27%, but a 49/36 raise in the effort (36%) the way I've done it - which is 7/8 down to 3/4.

Either way I can recommend the modification.

So I have just purchased one of those Jaguar ones on the Ebay link. Thanks for that... :)
