#1 Chassis Plate

Post by Candellara » Mon Oct 07, 2013 10:49 am

Guys

My large vehicle identity plate is way past it's best. SNG supply new unstamped ones.

Where does everyone get replacements "stamped" with engine number etc?

I seem to remember that there were some differences in exactness of the reproduction of the data plate between the different vendors. Do all major suppliers sell the "correct" plate? I will be needing one too (in the near future I hope).

#6 Chassis Plate

I got one from SNG some time back and was not overly impressed.....bit fuzzy and uneven contrast. I eventually got one from Classic Jaguar in the USA, which was superb, crisp and even colour. Cost $US25, plus US$25 for stamping (which they donate to a charity...) Have a look at classicjaguar.com. Other stuff of interest on the site too.......

I corresponded recently with Dan Mooney about their plates, which he claims are exactly as original. Trouble is, they aren't. I don't blame them, because photo etching is rarely done these days, but rather than have the alloy grid and lettering in bas-relief, they are just screen printed like anyone else's.

In fact, paradoxically, the deeper the paint layer, the more recessed the lettering, where on the original it was the black which was recessed and the letters which are fractionally proud. You've got to be real anorak to care, but once a screen print, always a screen print. To me, even a beaten-up original looks better on a pristine new shell than a pristine new but ersatz plate of the wrong form.

I don't think the stamp fonts are the same as Jaguar used either.

Point is I am quite sure the original is not in my pile of parts and NOS will be quite difficult to obtain, I guess.

I've never seen NOS etched plates Pim, so printed or anodised are your only option AFAIK.

Pete, I was using the stylistic device of the understatement, which I thought was quite popular with the British ;-)

British? Moi? Yeah, well, as a pure Belgian by parentage, whose nickname as a boy was Pim and who now lives in the USA, I have a stack of excuses :-).

I will be driving 'door Belgi? nar Nederland' and back to the UK over the weekend of the 26th October, as it happens, but on a very tight schedule. So no chance to socialise I fear. Spijtig :-(

Pete, so not even a stop planned for a Leffe?

BTW, during the resto of my car, missed the body nr and could not retrace it in any of the documents which only indicate the chassis nr.
Do I need to pass by JDHT to get this info or is there an easier access data bank available?
Cheers,
Ralph
